Alright, I formatted the PC, reinstalled WIndows XP w/SP1. I've got Norton Personal Firewall and Norton ANtivirus installed, all up to date. I have Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware 6 installed, also all up to date. They catch nothing.

Problem: Everything works peachy keen for a while, but then, I cannot open new instances of programs(such as IE or Firefox), taskmanager will not open on my screen(the the CPU meter appears in taskbar), and attempts to install programs while this is going on causes the isntall to hang, and things to get really messed. I even formatted agian, reiinstalled XP again, and it's STILL happening. I've downloaded all the security patches from Microsoft, except SP2(it hangs because of the problem stated above)

After looking through the list of processes, the one that caught my eye was "vpc32.exe". I've never seen that before, and did some of my own research on it. Low and behold, confusion as to what it really is. Some sites say it's part of Norton, others say a worm. SInce I've had Norton isntalled on previous isntalls of WIn XP, and have never seen this process, I'll go with the worm option.

Anyhow, I've gone through all teh necessary steps on various tech sites to remove this worm, and it still ends up in my startup, and i continue t hhave the problems stated above. Here's my HJT lock. Any help would be greatly appreciated(trying to get rid of it with HJT also did not work for long)

my experience with HJT is zero. so i will not advise you there.

a suggestion though. next time you decide to update/reinstall everything. get the latest copies of adaware, spybot s&d, and load these before you get on the internet to do any updating. also load your antivirus. a while ago, i had basically the same problem. doing it like i just said, saved me a heartache. now i am clean.....good luck.

i am sure one of the 'resident experts' will be looking at your HJT log.

ah, i should have mentioned that. I did load all that stuff up before setting up the internet connection. But ya, needed the net connection to do all the updates :p

The firewall does catch the vpc32.exe file when it tries to access the internet, however, that doesn't stop things from getting messed up. Norton ANtivirus doesn't catch it as a virus/trojan/adware or anything, and neither does SPybot and Ad-Aware
