Frequent momentary cursor freezes

729 Views 2 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  mobo
I have a 2-yr old Duron 800 Win98SE machine with 256RAM. Just recently I started to experience frequent 'momentary' (maybe 5 seconds) freezes of the cursor. These things happen like every couple of minutes. In the absence of these freezes, the computer otherwise works fine. I've tried re-booting, de-fragmenting, and have only 2 or 3 apps open at once. Even with 3 apps open, my system resources are still at 60-70%.

The only thing that has changed to the system in recent times is that about a month ago I switched monitors, but both are 17" SVGA.

Any help in solving this really annoying problem will be appreciated. Thanks.

If that doesn't help then :

Please get Spybot S&D to clear out any spyware.
http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=mirrors

Install the program and open it.

Before doing any scanning click Online and Search for Updates .
Put a check mark at and install all updates .
Click Check for Problems nd when the scan is finished have Spybot fix all it finds marked in red .

Then after reboot :
Download 'Hijack This! http://www.spychecker.com/program/hijackthis.html
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the " scan " button will change into a " save log " button.
Press that, save the log , load it in Notepad, and copy its contents here. Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.
