freezing up

825 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Doberman
Hey guys, I've been having problems w/ my comp freezing up randomly...while on-line, while playing games, etc. I've checked some of the other threads on this site and followed some of the excellent advice like... unchecking things in msconfig, running spybot, etc. One of the other things suggested was posting a copy of the start-up list so you guys can take a look at it...for baddies! I was wondering if someone can take a look at mine...since it's all Greek to me.

How do you connect to the internet? dial, cable, dsl?
Do you have an ethernet adapter (Network Interface Card) installed?
I just have a dial up connection through Earthlink. I don't think it freezes because of the internet connection because it does it sometimes when I'm playing games and not connected to the internet.
I would start by unchecking the following from msconfig. From what I have seen it creates more trouble than it stops. I use to use it but all it did is cause problems for me.

Norton Crashguard Monitor
cgmenu.exe

"Troublesome program that doesn't actually work with WinME so Norton removed it from SystemWorks 2001 "

Quoted from startups list.

Other listings in startups list that you may want to un-check. Then you can run them only when you need them. Hope that this helps. jm100dm

AudioHQ
Ahqtb.exe

For Creative Soundblaster Live! series soundcards. System tray application for SB Live! functions. Available via Start -> Programs

Creative Launcher
CTLauncher.exe

For Creative Soundblaster Live! series soundcards. Adds a quick-launch bar to the top of the display and a System Tray icon. Available via Start -> Programs

Norton System Doctor
Sysdoc32.exe

Norton Disk Doctor from Norton Utilities. Automatically runs at start-up, major resource hog and best started manually form Start -> Programs. Delete the shortcut in the Start -> Programs -> Startup folder as well

Crash Guard definitely has to go.

While you are there, unselect System Doctor. It is entirely unnecessary to have it running continuously. It is a great consumer of ram, cpu and system resources. And, can be responsible for sluggish performance.

Run it and/or WinDoctor on a periodic basis when you do other regular system maintenance.
Thanks for all the great suggestions. I'll try all of them when I get a chance. Any ohter suggestions will be greatly appreciated also. You guys are an excellent source of info.
