A friend of mine is having a really hard time figuring out why her computer keeps freezing so I said I would ask you knowledgable people here.

She hardly ever uses it and has almost no programs on it but just surfing the net or even poking around the desktop will freeze the computer. Nothing to do but reboot - Ctrl-alt-del won't even work.

She's tried spybot, adaware, hijack this, housecall etc and I checked it out myself...I'm sure there is nothing like that on her computer. So we can rule that out. She's installed a couple of RAM and HD testers all came back fine.

She does have a firewire card installed and if she attempts to use it (for transferring movies) it will freeze for sure. This could be lack of RAM even though you only need 64MB (she has 256MB) as per the box requirements.

Could the firewire be affecting everything else even when not in use?

Could a windows file be missing? A setting somewhere perhaps? Hardware or software conflict?

Any suggestions and/or advice is welcome. Thank you.

Firewire looks a likely culprit, but who knows have you any objection to posting a hijackthis log ? if not go here and download it to its own folder in somewhere like My documents for instance (this is important) then post a log back here for analysis ...

I take it that you have used the latest updated versions of Adaware and Spybot?

Put a tick by the following and have hijack FIX them after closing any open windows

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O16 - DPF: {74D05D43-3236-11D4-BDCD-00C04F9A3B61} (HouseCall Control) - http://a840.g.akamai.net/7/840/537/...all/xscan53.cab

Then as far as Im concerned the log is clean,is there any improvement?

Well, so far so good. I asked her yesterday and she said she hasn't had a problems. I don't see how one of those things could have cause the computer to freeze though. Why eliminate housecall? Is it because of teh missing searchhook? Just curious and thanks.

Go into the error log it should tell you what the culprit is. Was having my computer freeze up, I thought it was Firefox not supporting my Logitech
mouse and keyboard. My error log indicated that the problem was in the modem
I upgraded the modem driver and that fixed the problem.
