free internet: useful or wasteful? HELP!

A few weeks back, i purchased counterstrike (along with a plethora of other half-life games, but that's besides the point). Anyway, i quickly installed it when i got home, already sweating with excitement. I had been wanting to play this game for years now, and today was the end of my wait! Fate, however, is not without a sense of irony. You see, my internet connection is made through a local college that my dad teaches at. Because I use their modem, or something of the sort, to connect to things like AOL and such, my internet connection is totally free. However, it seems that counterstrike doesn't accept that connection.

After installing the game, it asked me to update it. I clicked "yes" and it sent me to an update screen, seperate from the game. i clicked "start", and the update installer checked my computer for a connection to the internet. I was already connected to niu (the local college), but the installer told me that a connection was unavailable. At this time, flinging my computer out the window seemed like a splendid idea, but i knew that there must be someway to fix this horrid problem. Unfortunately, i havent found it. So now i ask you: "How can i get the counterstrike update installer to accept my connection to the local college (which, just for your information, is a 56k modem...i think...ya.)".
I hope to get an answer soon. Thank you.

Do other online games or filesharing services work?
Some colleges try to block these programs on their network because they use a lot of bandwidth.
This internet thing also keeps me from doing anything else game-wise. i can file share, but i cant update my games. Now, BECAUSE i cant update my games, i have NO IDEA if they will even work once i update them. i cant join games because i dont have an updated version. once i can update, then i can find out if i can join games at all.
I also had that happen to me. What I did was download the updates from official site. I later found that it had to do with my firewall, and ports it was using, somehow by luck I got it work. But updating by downloading .exe from website works.
