Fonts too small from laptop output via HDMI to 55inch TV

I have very poor eyesight and currently watch movies by sending them to my TV via a HDMI cable from my Windows 8 laptop. The problem is that my laptop just broke and I had to replace it with another, but I can't seem to get the settings right to be able to read text on the desktop and in media playing applications.

I've played with various settings like resolution, but there doesn't seem to be a setting that uses my whole TV screen (though the old laptop had an appropriate one) and when I run Daum Potplayer to play movies, the controls are so small, I can't read them (though the old laptop was ok).

Can anyone suggest how I can try and find a fix for this, or offer some other solution so I can see text - maybe some other player?

Many thanks everyone.

Go to Start Menu > Settings > Ease of Access > Display
you need to use one of the 16:9 or 16:10 resolutions in the display settings. Also you will need to change the picture format in the tv settings. I use full on my 55 inch tv
Thanks so much for your help.

I didn't have much luck with Ease of Access settings, but will try changing my TV settings tonight.

Have a great day.
