i have a problem in that on every occasion when i access internet explorer on windows xp my homepage is changed to "about: blank" regardless of efforts to apply "www.yahoo.com" on internet options, running cwshredder, adaware, etc.

when cwshredder is run it shows no problems except noting "6 changed ie registry values" that it has supposedly fixed. adaware shows malware present which i then remove. generally i can log off yahoo and bring it back up at least once before i try the same thing again and it is back to "about: blank" as my homepage.

i thought i had it fixed yesterday when i checked for microsoft updates, downloaded about 11, restarted the computer several times, logging off and on yahoo multiple times in the process without any new incidents.

a couple hours later after further use by kids (nba.com, easports.com, mlb.com) and it is back to "about: blank".

can anyone help? our home it "specialist" is confounded.

Another thing You should know,System restore will have copies of all the things you delete,so I would turn it off till you are sure your system is clean and running the way you like, then turn it back on and create a new restore point.

Clear out your TIF and other temp files. In Internet Options, under the General tab
click the Delete temporary internet files, choose to delete all Offline content.
Also, go to Start - Find - Files or folders - in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose
Edit - select all - File - delete. Empty the contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder
and C:\temp folder, if you have one. Empty Recycle bin.

rude:

did the first part under internet options. then went to start and hit "search" because there is no "find" function or icon. i assumed "search" is the equivalent of "find". then went to "files and folders" and searched "my computer". came up with 7 "c:\windows\temp folders" and decided to do nothing because i assumed maybe there would/should have been only one based on your message to empty the folder.

there were no "c:\temp folders" which also concerned me because i believe you assumed there should be one.

for these reasons, i have done nothing at this point to delete any files or folders under "my computer" until further word from you or another.

rude:

i looked at the dates the 7 temp folders were created and they seemed recent so i tried to delete all 7. five i could delete but 2 i could not. i then ran cwshredder, sby-bot and adaware and located stuff on adaware (6 items) that i then deleted.

i then went back into tools, internet options and changed my homepage. it seemed to be working and sticking.

interestingly, however, i then went back into look for the 2 "c:\wimdows\temp folders" i could not delete before. there are 2 temp folders still present but they have different names now: "lastgood.temp" and "msdownld.temp". i am wondering if something is morphing inside my computer. i will turn it off and try to restart to see what that brings.

In the Scanlog your start page is showing as:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://yahoo.com/

not about.blank ??

There is nothing there that I see to explain it, but you can check and fix these items for good housekeeping.

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {339BB23F-A864-48C0-A59F-29EA915965EC} - (no file)

You might want to review this thread and do a new, updated, antivirus scan:

also clean out your cookies

Another thing You should know,System restore will have copies of all the things you delete,so I would turn it off till you are sure your system is clean and running the way you like, then turn it back on and create a new restore point.

here are both of my posts to you combined,I'm pretty sure that if you follow these instructions your problem will go away
