fixing the problem

OK, I've been working with this forum to fix a very difficult problem with my computer for quite a while now, and while you have been very helpful, I have still not been able to fix it.

the problem is that, in every game/program that requires system resources/ram/power, whatever you want to call it, the game slows down to about a 1/50 of its normal speed, for about 25 seconds. the first minute or two of play, the game stays normal, but once it starts, it does it about every 30 seconds or so.

thing is, its been getting worse. used to happen every minute or two, now it happens every 30 secionds. used to be that anything that took less or equal to of the system resources of Half life that it would not slow down (in other words, it didnt slow down in half life). Now it slows down in almost everything. even flash games, playing music, uninstalling stuff, etc. its getteing worse

I've narrowed it down, I guess...

SYSTEM SPECS:

Intel 1.5 ghz
512 sdram
geforce 4 ti4200
Motherboard make/model
Windows XP (home)
DirectX 9 (problem happens in 8 also)
40 GB
CD-ROM
DVD
250W PSU
Compaq Presario 5300
5320US

Previous Thread

To sum it all up, I've tried:

-defrag
-changing pagefile size
-checkdisk
-opening up computer and checking if everything was in order
-updating drivers
-checking for spyware
-disabling Norton
-uninstalling stuff that I got at the time it started
-a WHOLE lot more (I don't even remember :( )
-the following:

Sorry for late response, been busy/lazy. I decided to move this thread out of hardware, because according to current developments, it isn't a hardware problem.

I tried calling circuit city, so that they would help me with the warranty, but they wouldn't, they said it was NOT a hardware problem. (I had been leaning toward it being a power supply problem, but I guess not)

Just to make sure, I tried unplugging the floppy, CD, DVD, and 1 stick of RAM, and I tried playing a game. the problem still happened.

so it can't be a hardware problem. must be software, but then how do I fix it?

obviously, reformatting would be an option, but its a last resort. and if I did, what would be the easiest way to keep some of my stuff that I needed on it? or do you have any other suggestions? do you know of any places I could take it to?

thanks

i see ms has put out a hotfix for dx9
have you checked your temps when you get the problem
p/s is a bit on the light side can you borrow one to switch over
it seems a strange response from circuit city, over here they would fix it and if it was found to be software they would give you a bill for it,unless they knew it was their problem then some of the less reputable ones would fob you off
Among the "whole lot more," did you go into XP's Administrative Tools>Services and shut down all the unncessary ones?

If not, there's a good guide for doing that on Black Viper's site,

There's a particularly nasty bit of spyware called CoolWebSearch that requires its own removal tool which you can get on this Spyware info page. It can cause system slowdowns similar to what you describe.

I doubt it'll help, but where?

I dont understand

I have no ones to borrow, though unplugging everything proved that it was not the psu, didnt it?

I did, though I never tried the bare bones minimum. I did, however, try using diagnostic startup in msconfig

I dont have cool web search. or, I dont think I do.

look in the bios and see if it lists your volts and temps
did you look in the event viewer in admin tools
unpluging would see if it was overloaded if it is faulty would'nt help
try here for s/ware monitor

I've been in the bios many times, I dont remember seeing anything that looked like that. I'll check, but could you be more specific on what I'm looking for?

yes.

hm... I see....

well, that circuit city guy said it definitely wasnt a hardware problem, but I guess he could be wrong. but if its faulty, then I would need circuit city to replace it.

is there anything else I could do to determine whether the p/s was faulty?
try here for s/ware monitor
I already have a spyware monitor
http://www.hmonitor.com/
this is where to find a software monitor for the temps and volts
and what did you see in the event monitor
if your m/b supports monitoring the volts and temps it would be under something like
hardware monitor
where you will see fan speeds and voltages listed down the page
the only way for you to test the p/s is to swap it you don't have the tech knowledge to do it any other way if you could borrow a 350w or bigger, ask your friends one might have upgraded
If I do recall, you have a proprietary Compaq PSU that you can't swap out with any other brand, is that correct? That means that you would have to buy a new one from compaq for the cost of my entire computer. I believe that was covered in the old thread.

If you could borrow an HD from somone it would make formatting less of a last resort... just back up the stuff you need to save to the borrowed drive, then format, reinstall windows, and Ta-da, problem solved, IF it is truly is a software problem.
I already gave that link didnt I?

anyways...
and what did you see in the event monitor
I dont remember, but nothing.... eventful....

how do I transfer from hard drive to hard drive?
In My Computer there would be 2 hard drives listed instead of one... just copy/paste from one to the other
but I would have to plug it into my computer, then unplug it, correct? but how do I do that if theres only one P/S plug to the hard drive?
You can unplug the CD-ROM drives temporarily to copy the files across and use one of those plugs.
really? cool. I guess it might not fit, but then I could just leave my computer open. and its plug and play, so I could just plug it in and it would detect it?

thats a good idea. now I just need a hard drive.
is it possible to use a laptop hard drive to plug into my computer?
i believe there is an adapter for this
damn, thats too compicated already.

I'll just try to find a normal one
well??
I could mail you an old one i've got...800 megs...:)
if you pay for shipping
sorry.... :(

I'm just busy and stuff. I just have no idea where I'm going to get a hard drive, and I'm unmotivated to do so. Maybe I should just give up. I've been at this probem for what must be a year.

A big restraint is my parents, who have to approve anything the slightest bit risky, or that I would have to pay for. Whenever I bring and idea to my dad he just kind of frowns at it.

So, yeah, I dont think you mailing me one is too good of an idea. Plus, thats probably too small. I'll keep looking, I'll get back to you when I find one. If I never reply, just assume I'm dead, or I gave up.
I haven't actually read the whole thread, but i don't think anybody has suggested this yet.

do a simple drive defrag.
