Is there a way to find the numbers for a website without being able to use the RUN command? Is there a way to find the numbers for a website without being able to use the RUN command?

IP= internet protocol
NS=nameserver

For example, in order to reach the lincoln website (auto) I key in:

http://www.lincoln.com/

BUT if I know the correct IP (i think it is called), I could just key in:

http://136.1.240.117/

My question is, if I do not know the numbers, is there a way to find them out without access to the cmd prompt? (not able to get to ms dos on that computer)

thanks for any help you can give.

Used to belong to a forum years ago that got slow because of the web host and ads etc. The web master changed the address to the IP number and we used that to get to the site and it was faster.
I think it by passes the DNS lookup so that is why it was faster.
I tried the link TOYMAN1952 posted but guess with firewalls or what ever setup Mike has here you can't get the IP address to show up.

You would add it to the hosts file found in , if you are using windows xp, c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.

Add a line with the ip addres first and then the name you would like to resolve it to.

For example if you wanted to make it so forums.techguy.org was in your hosts file you would add:

24.137.12.200 forums.techguy.org

I would not do this unless necessary as if the ip address changes, you will no longer be able to reach the site unless you edit the hosts file again.

In general adding these entries to a host file not increase your internet browsing speed at all.

Grinler,

Thanks I will think about adding to the host file.

I just used 24.137.12.200 to come here and I see ads but I did not login so they should go away but when I click on any of the links The 24.137.12.200 is no longer part of the address.

The site I was talking about in the pass was all set up to run using the IP number so it was faster but it had the IP number in every link to the site.
Where here using the 24.137.12.200 is good only getting me here to the main page.

I was saying that in the pass it was faster but it was only at a website that was set up to use the IP number.
I mean it was faster because me and everyone changed are bookmarks for the site because it was so much faster.

But for it to work here Mike would have to change his site links around and have the IP number in every link at this stie.

Like this here for the first page of this thread.
http://24.137.12.200/showthread.php?s=&threadid=215032&perpage=15&pagenumber=1
When you click to see the 2nd page you get this here. http://forums.techguy.org/showthread.php?threadid=215032&perpage=15&pagenumber=2

So the 24.137.12.200 is not good for the whole site if Mike does not make the changes.
Plus using the 24.137.12.200 to come here I see ads and I have the ads turn off here.

Right bob :)

It was something the webmaster did because of the web host and there ad company that was getting really bad.
They had http://novogate.efront, flyswat doubleclick and others on the hosting the site. efront when under.
Even got so bad at many times that he talked them into turn off the ads. Then because of people starting lots of trouble he closed down his site. It was a very good site on IBM Aptiva's. I found this site about a month later and it is my new home. :)

Domains names were devised to ensure that users don't have to browse by IP addresses which are quite cumbersome to remember.

Secondly, if the site changes hosting service provider, its IP address will change. So then you will have to again find out the new IP address and update your book marks.
