Can anyone tell me how to get an IP address on an XP machine?
I've tried the command ipconfig which gave a fail message.

I'm assuming that you are already in command line when you enter "ipconfig"...are you entering the command at the "C:" prompt, or possibly at another drive letter designation - another letter prompt may occasionally pop up if you have any mapped drives.
If IPCONFIG is failing then typically there is something wrong with the networking files. It may be good to get that resolved.
