can you fastforawrd in an AVI? Seems that you can't either press the buttons or drag the scroll. Is the only option to convert to an mpg or mov and would this be 'lossy'? What program would do the deed?

What are you using to play the AVI? If it is WMP then you should be able to fast forward or use the slider. However if the AVI is a rather large file the how fast WMP depends greatly on system speed and performance.
Converting the Movie to Mpeg2 will have little degradation of quality but vastly improve system response to controls. Converting to Mpeg1 would be OK to but the quality will be decreased if you are viewing on large screens such as a television. If you are burning these videos on SVCD for play on a Home DVD player then you will need mpeg2.

I use WMP and somehow this movie doesn't allow fastforward. I slide the slider and it returns to where it was. What programs can I use to convert to mpg? File isn't too big BTW.

One of the best sites I have found for information on converting, editing, capturing, etc. is

TMPGEnc has a great program for converting to Mpeg1 or Mpeg2. However there Mpeg2 conversions are limited to 30 day usage without purchase of encoder.
