Hey, my CPU fan is making a loud whirring noise. Bad? 7-year old computer. New PSU or CPU fan? This is my parents computer. They wont buy a new one. They dont need one. Just help get rid of the sound!

Also, when does BTX and PCI-Xpress come out?

You can get a new fan for the cpu but you will need to know which cpu you have(Manufacterer, socket type). They are not that expensive and a lot cheaper than a burnt out cpu. I would repace it as soon as possible.

Open up the case and see if the fan maybe needs cleaning. if the fan is caked with crud as they tend to get they start getting noisier. If you are really careful you can remove the fan from the heatsink and clean it with a stiff bristle brush, tehn reassmble it. Do not use a bruch teh will scratch the fan blades as this too will cause noise. (experience talking here)
