I have had an external HDD that i put together for several months now, and it has always worked fine. the other night it started making bad noises and wasn't recognized by windows, or rather is recognized but doesn't "install" (shows up in device manger with an "!"). As i was trying to find if the error was with the drive (seagate Baracudda ST3200822A 200gb ata-100) or the enclosure (kingwin KH-350U-S) i found that the drive works fine when just hooked up to the ide channel on my motherboard, and the enclosure works just fine with another drive (old WD 120 gb ata-100). putting them back together the way i want it goes back the the same problem (wierd noises, not installed properly). I have no idea how to trouble shoot it beyond that, or what the problem may be. Help would be appreciated!

Hi
I dont know if this is related to your problem but I found out this week when attaching a logitech camera to my system that the system dropped my external drive (did not show up in explorer) when I detached the camera I was back in business. These were connected via USB. I still havent pinpointed the cause/effect, it could be power related or USB capacity releated. My suggestion is to unplug perifierals and see if your external drive reappears.
Hope this helps.

BTW, I am installing a high throughput 2.0 USB card and getting a USB 2,0 router to correct this configuration problem.

Let me know if this helps.

i had not added anything usb or otherwise to the system when it stopped working, and only have the drive and my mouse hooked up through USB right now. Hooking the mouse to a PS/2 converter doesn't seem to have any effect.
