Hey Guys,

I'm using a laptop hard drive as an external hard drive for my PC. I have a USB adapter, which is all installed. The problem is I can't access the drive. The FAQ provided suggest formatting the hard drive - which I can't work out how to do with out being able to see it in "My Computer" or it suggests assinging it as a removable storage device in its properties - also an option that I can't find. I've tried to get it working on another computer but still no joy.

I can however see it in "device manager" under disk drives

Please help, its been doing my head in all day-don't worry about suggesting something really obvious, I am fairly computer illiterate!

Go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management, see if the drive shows up in there. If it does right-click on it and choose Format and use NTFS.

If it's a virgin drive, you may have to first right click on the left and select "Initialize" before you do the partitioning and formatting.

cheers guys,

I followed your instructions and got it working! I had to create a partion on the drive as there was no option to format. I guess they must mean pretty much the same thing as it works!

Thanks again,

The sequence is, Initialize, Partition, Format.

If it works, you must have made it through the maze. :D
