In device manager it shows up as "XG3813V VGS5265 SCSI CdRom Device"

Acomdata HD500HE5-72
Are you sure about that part number? I can find many on-line references to an Acomdata HD500UHE5-72 but Google came up empty for HD500HE5-72.

Does the drive show up in any manner in the "My Computer" screen.

What exact OS are you running on the computer?

How was the information first put on the drive?

My mistake it is Acomdata HD500UHE5-72.
It is recognized as USB connection when it is turned on. Appears in My Computer as CD Drive (empty).
Running Windows XP Home.
Info was saved to the drive when it was recognized as a USB connected hard drive.....
ALSO, it actually has 2 entries in the Device Manager under DVD/CD Rom Drives - the one mentioned in the original posting (SCSI) and also DMI USB2.0 CD-ROM USB Device...

Thanks again for your help with this.

A few other small details ...

Do you you have the latest Windows XP updates installed? Did you happen to notice if the problem occurred after a particular update?

Is the drive plugged directly into the computer's USB port or are you going through a hub? If it is through a hub, have you tested with a direct connection to the computer's USB port?

Thank you for the information. I had first thought it may have been some type of glitch with one particular computer's Windows configuration. You might try contacting Acomdata customer support by first registering on their site and them submitting a support request:

http://www.acomdata.com/hdp/fs.html

Their PC users troubleshooting guide has a section on unrecognized drives but not one on drives that are not identified correctly. Not sure if it would help with your problem since it happens on more than one computer.
