I'm having the same problem as a few others I've seen on here so far... Spent the last 4 hours trying to find someone with a solution on here, so I figured I'd ask. My computer boots up to a blank desktop...No icons, no taskbar, and I can't even right click for the menu on my desktop. I Ctrl + Alt + Del and open Taskmanager and have run all my scans etc. Tried running a new Explorer.exe but all it does is Flash my Taskbar, then close itself again within seconds. I can load a few different programs through Taskmanager (Like firefox) but I can't get any results. Any kind of help would GREATLY be appreciated as I have many important files and such on this PC and would like to get it fixed.

Do you think it is virus or spyware related?
Can you boot into Safe Mode and get explorer to work?
Do you have any System Restore points set?
Have you tried a repair install?

Thanks squash. To answer those questions...I'm not really sure what caused it. I don't have any System Restores and can't do a repair without the disk...Lost all my opperating systems in the hurricane. I'll check out that thread and also try safemode and get back to yah...thanks for your help.

I had already read that thread and tried the stuff on it. Only thing I hadn't tried was the SFC scan, so I tried that...got this -- "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>/scannow
'/scannow' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file." -- The system restore link on there is for XP users only, and unfortunately I am running 2k Pro. Gonna try safemode to see where that goes.

My suggestion is to get a new set of recovery disks from the manufacturer of the computer, basically you are going to need them if this computer is to be fixed. When you get them make a copy of them and keep the originals somewhere that is safe even if it is in a safe deposit box.

Okay then...Looks like I look for a new operating system and reformat the whole thing then. My computer isn't a production computer, I custom built it myself a few years back. No way of getting new restore disks. I was absolutely stumped on this one, never had anything like it happen before. Thanks for all you guys' help. Keep up the good work.
