I've got a sheet with assets listed and totaled. Each asset is a different color but only if there's a value in the field, so the whole colum would be white unless there's a value in it. This sheet is a template so it will change constantly. Is there a way to say If there's a value, color the field this so I don't have to click and change the background color ever time?

You can do this but not with the normal format or function commands. You will need to use some Visual Basic.

Have you tried using Conditional Formatting?

It looks like maxflia has a great idea. I had forgotten about the conditional formatting.

It depends how many assets you have. With conditional formatting you're limited to three conditions (colours) ; if you need any more, you'll need code (or an add-in, maxflia10 ).

Well, this is the part of excel I don't have a clue in. I took a very basic programming class (and I suck at programming) and understand in "english" what I want to do, but when I look into the help, it all seems greek to me. And my condition is, if text in field color background this, else white. Wouldn't that still be the visual basic stuff? I mean, is it something *I* could do with little programming knowledge? I do, unfortunately, need more that three colors

I really need to start from the beginning I guess and learn how to use all that stuff. It just seems like such a big undertaking

It's indeed a whole other thing if you're going to do it properly.

OH, WOW, COOL! XL Guru, I really appreciate it. Esp that you put notes in there. It totally makes sense. I have hundreds of these to do. It's a very big and job and this may seem simple to you (obviously you know what you're doing but this is an incredible help for me and will save me so much time. I can't thank you enough. )
