Ethernet cable not connecting

1229 Views 5 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  TerryNet
I have been using this desktop for the past 2 year with no issues. Recently I have moved house and want to connect via an Ethernet cable to the internet rather than WiFi in the hopes of higher speeds. My problem is that the computer says that there is not cable connected (although a connection does flash up briefly every so often).

I have already: tested that the cable and port work using my laptop (no problem there)
uninstalled my network card and allowed windows to re-install it
checked for loose connections

I have also noted that the light in the Ethernet port on the computer is lit solid yellow when the cable is connected and the computer in not turned on but as soon as i boot it up and the OS starts running the light turns off.

Any help would be appreciated :).

For the desktop (and for the laptop if it is running Windows) ...

Open a (black) Command Prompt window:
Hold the Windows logo key and press r; in the Run box type cmd and click on OK.

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

[Press ENTER after each command.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

I assume that is for the desktop. Does the laptop have gigabit ethernet? If you don't know, what OS is on it?
Sorry, I missed the part where you wanted me to do the same on my laptop. Here it is for the laptop:

That ipconfig /all for the laptop also shows "Media disconnected" for the ethernet. If the cable really was unplugged at that time, and it does actually get a good connection when the cable is plugged in, then my conclusion is that there is a problem with the desktop's ethernet (including a small chance that the port is just dirty).
