Hi.
I've been through a lot trying to figure out how to fix this. My computer has been very reliable for over 7 years, then this....
I'll first give the ERROR msg DETAILS, then I'll list what I've done.

..no idea..
I don't know a heck of a lot about fixing computer problems. Basically, I freak out and try anything. Here's what happened and what I've done.

----------All booted up alright, up to when the desktop appeared. All icons appeared as usual, but the ERROR prompt came up, rendering all unclickable except for the error prompt. When clicked, the desktop seemed to refresh for an instant, but a second later the ERROR came up again.
----------After clicking it about a hundred times, I noticed in the split second when the thing was refreshing, I could actually click on something. But only for a second..., and then there would be the Hourglass, and then I'd click the ERROR to proceed for another split second, ..repeat ad inf.., until I finally managed to find a configuration thing to enable a diagnostic start up. So I succeded in doing that and went into safe mode.
-----------In safe mode I tried numerous things, but going out of safe mode continued to show the ERROR. What I decided to do was get rid of IE 6 and reinstall IE 5.5. It worked! I'm out of Safe Mode and now able to get on the internet -- ( could not get online in safe mode).
-----------What I THINK it is, is the IE 6. I dowloaded this and that IE, trying to upgrade from the 5.5. I downloaded IE 6.0 again, got rid of the old one, and tried to install it. Installation was a success, but the ERROR was right there to laugh in my face. Had to do it aaaaall over again to get back here again.... Wow.
------------I tried the IE 6.1 with the Patch thing..., but could not do it because I needed 6.0 installed. Hopeless.
------------I ran the scandisk a few times with no problem, but when trying to run the Defrag, it would give up saying "there could be a currupt file somewhere and to run scandisk again." Grrr.

..........So, with my limited knowledge I take refuge here; maybe finding someone to whom this is an easy fix, and perhaps an easy step-by-step for the inquiring Wrek.... All is GIANT 16-color nightmare.
please please pleeeeeease help! I love my computer... I have VERY little money, you see... So much info inside -- many cool programs that won't fit on disk. So, I'm freakin a bit.

Are you running Win95 ?
If so, IE6 is not compatible and will cause you no end of trouble.

Stick with IE 5.5

Windows98, proper.
..Read a few entries on this forum and went ahead with downloading Adware, Spybot, and Hijack. Ran all of them.
My start up Log is very minimal, but got rid of a five or six obvious peculiarities. Here it is, if it will help.

After getting rid of a few I reinstalled IE6, but the ERROR was there. On 5.5 again.

..Maybe useful. Upon having reinstalled 5.5, while still in 6, it asks to restart when installation is completed. When clicking "ok, restart.." that "busy.." prompt comes up. The one that gives the options to Wait, or Cancel, or.. one other thing, forgot. Hmm. Just struck a chord, because somewhere along the way through all of this, that happened before. Therefore, I'm thinking that the ERROR is due to something automatically starting up and yet, for some reason, never completes...blabla...

IE 5.5 working. IE 6 gets ERROR. Checked other versions of windows to install, starting with 5.5 because back in 6 I couldn't do much -- tried installing 6.1......hmm hmm hmm...

I see I gave the impression I had been using 5.5 prior to this happening, and the impression that all of this occured due to trying to install IE6. I can see how you'd gather that, (sorry), but not the case. For years using IE6. Due to the new ERROR, resorted to installing 5.5 to do anything at all. Tricky thing.

--- Tho my problem remains unsolved, just want to say thanx for the great forum. I've been having a not-so-unpleasant downtime, suprisingly, reading all the interesting problems and success stories. Today is my day off.. -- lots of domestic things neglected of which need tending to, so I'll leave the forum up and refresh here n there, probably every 1/2 hour!, to see if any replies.... I'll be here all day! Think I'll become a computer troubleshooter!! Maybe lotsa money, as it appears certain that there would never be a lack of work..........
