Was able to play music the last time I had logged onto my computer (day before yesterday). Have logged on tonight to play some music from Itunes (latest version) and an error message comes up saying " Itunes had detected a problem with your audio configuration. Audio/video playback may not operate properly" so i put a cd into the drive to see if it would work and tried to play it through Windows Media player and that errored as well saying "Windows media cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. there might not be a sound device installed on computer, it might be in use by another program or it might not be funtioning properly". I have rebooted, troubleshooted throught the sound, speech & audio devices section of XP and tested realtek which is supposed to be my sound device. I was able to get some sound out of speakers when I was playing around with the mixer on realtek but other than that, I have had nothing. There is only one thing that possibly could be out of order and that is When the box comes up for sound,speech and audio. it doesn't give me an option to select drop down boxes and tell me there is no audio device, no playback device,no recording device and no midi device.. I never looked at this section before the problem so don't know if this is normal or not when i go into each device (realtek and the audio codecs) they all show say "this device is working properly" and it says it for everything.
Pleeeease can someone help me.. I don't want to take it back to the shop to get fixed!!!

Most likely the motherboard drivers for the on-board audio chips have become corrupted.

Download them from Toshiba if available, or use the CD's that came with the laptop.

The default Windows drivers may well say that the device is OK, but that does not mean it will work.

Thanks for your help guys... I will keep both options in mind just in case it happens again. I turned the computer off for the 100th time last night trying to fix it and when i turned it back on, it was working!!!! No idea what had gone wrong..... the sound was a bit warbled and sounded like I had downloaded the best hits of the chipmunks but I figured that one out... in trying to fix the actual problem I was playing around with the Realtek mixer and had turned Karaoke on... I only figured that one out today though.. )

Both errors come up for me as well with iTunes and Windows Media, but I can still hear the usual start-up/shut-down sounds. There is also another issue associated with this: for no reason at all, occasionally my start bar will suddenly switch from the usual Windows XP blue to a more simple format (almost like that of the older systems). The top bars of open windows have been doing the same thing.
I downloaded the new Yahoo Messenger two days ago, and in attempt to fix the problems (that seem to have come with it), I uninstalled the extras it tacks on (Yahoo Toolbar, etc). However, the problem has not gone away. I scanned for viruses but my scanner (PC-cillin) found nothing.
Any advice besides the system restore? I'd like to avoid that until the last minute if possible. I'm working off a Dell Inspiron laptop and I'm ready to go crazy.

Daughter had the same problem. We went into Device manager and removed the sound card (Realtek), reinstalled and the sound came back.

I had the exact same problem as asjackson and my start menu was going crazy but I fixed the problem by taking bluenosemo's advice and it WORKED!!
