Error message on start up

955 Views 8 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  TonyKlein
Every time I boot up I get the following error message, 'XML.PARSE.DLL not found'.
Has anyone got a clue what this refers to, can I delete the program that needs this .dll file, or if I need it where can I get it from.
Thanks in anticipation.

It means that as you start up, Windows thinks it has to load an application that needs this file.
Probably one you have recently uninstalled, but which was not completely removed.

Does this ring any bells?

Let's have a look at your startup programs. That might well lead us to the culprit:

Go to Start/run, and type Msinfo32, followed by OK.
Go to Software Environment/Startup Programs.
Now click Edit/'Select all', and then 'copy'
Paste the contents in your post.
Here is my start up list

Hiya

Lets have a look here:

You have some spyware, but we'll leave that to the end.

ZoneAlarm: keep

run Win.ini hpfsched: keep

AIM: AOL Instant Messager. If connected to the internet, automatically runs up AIM. Convenience more than anything. AIM can be started from Start -> Programs

ScanRegistry: keep

TaskMonitor: The Task Monitor the disk-access patterns of programs when they are started and stores this information in log files in the Applog folder. Task Monitor also records the number of times you use a program. The Disk Defragmenter tool uses this information to optimize your hard disk so that programs that you use frequently are loaded faster. Not required - but can be useful

SystemTray: keep

LoadPowerProfile: Power management specifics such as monitor shut-off, system standby, etc. keep

TIPS: Suggests tips on using your mouse. Not required

POINTER: Microsoft Intellipoint software for their Intellimouse series of mice. Only needed if enable any of the advanced features as Win98/Me supports the basic features by default

Scan Detector: For your scanner. Dunno

PrimaLauncher: dunno

Go!Zilla dial-up: Spyware. See at the end.

LoadQM: Loads the MSN Explorer Query Manager - a waste of resources and bandwidth. Also installed by the latest version of MSN Messenger. Not required

Iomega Startup Options: Used by Iomega drives. Available via Start -> Programs - not required

WinampAgent: System Tray application that starts up WinAmp media player. Not required - can be started manually from Start -> Programs

QuickTime Task: System Tray access to Apple's "Quick Time" viewer from version 5 onwards. Not required

Gator: spyware. at the end

Adaptec DirectCD: Unless you have a CD-RW in the drive to drag and drop files to it you don't need DirectCD. Available via Start -> Programs - not required. Also covered under "DirectCD

webHancer: spyware. at the end

CreateCD: Adaptec Easy CD Creator system tray application (pre version 5). Available via Start -> Programs - not required

SchedulingAgent: Microsoft Scheduling Agent displayed as a box with a stopwatch in the System Tray - only needed if you have regular scheduled disk defragmenting, ScanDisk, etc. Recommend you run these at regular intervals anyway so not needed as they can interrupt other programs

TrueVector: keep

MiniLog: keep

Now, for the ones that you don't want, go to Run and type MSCONFIG. Startup tab and uncheck all that you don't want, apply and restart. If you're unsure, do each seperately, but apply and restart after each one.

Now, the spyware. Go to Control Panel | AddRemove and uninstall Gator, Gozilla and webhancer.

Then, go to MSCONFIG again and uncheck the 3 entries. Then, run this program AddAware www.lavasoftusa.org
Install and runit, only after you have done the other things. Ensure that Deep registry Scan is enabled, and remove all except any references to Web3000 or new.net. If you're unsure, copy/paste the list here.

Also, whilst you're there, download RefUpdate and run it. This will give you the latest updates.

and now for something completely different: do a search for this xml.parse.dll file.

Maybe you do have it, but it's sitting in a folder where Windows can't find it.

If you do find it, copy it to C:\Windows\System, and try again.

Good luck,
FILES\NETSCAPE\COMMUNICATOR\PROGRAM\AIM\aim.exe -cnetwait.odl

There's the culprit. I saw this once before at another Forum. Here's the explanation courtesy of rmbox:
The problem was caused by the piggy backed AOL Advertising file "cnetwait.odl" on the
aim.exe startup seen in your StartUp.Log.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"AIM"="C:\\PROGRAM FILES\\AIM95\\aim.exe -cnetwait.odl"

The cnetwait.odl was calling on "aim.ocm" "advert.ocm" or other ".ocm" file
which in turn was calling on the XMLPARSE.DLL.

Simply removing the aim.exe from your startups would solve the Windows startup error.

The error message might appear again whenever AIM is used though.
Some folks have found that openining the cnetwait.odl in notepad
and editing a couple of lines eliminated this bug.

It was done like this:

The cnetwait.odl was opened using Notepad.

This section was located:

on_group(5)
{
load_ocm advert required
}
on_group(11)
{
load_ocm advert required
}

A semi-colon was placed in front of the load_ocm lines so that it looked like this:

on_group(5)
{
; load_ocm advert required
}
on_group(11)
{
; load_ocm advert required
}

(This is the code that loads the ".ocm" file which was calling the XMLPARSE.DLL file)

The file was saved and the bug eliminated.

One unfortunate side effect of this edit was that
all those wonderful AOL advertisements that show up
in the aim window no longer appeared.
Thanks Mo,

I don't think we would have found this out without knowing what you just told us.
Except of course by trial and error, which is alright too, I guess, but it's certainly good to know the reason behind it.
I had already solved the problem of the XML.Parse.dll file by removing the AIM.exe.
I just hadn't had the chance to post a reply.
If I did get rid of webhancer would I still be able to use Audiogalaxy satellite, a programme which I use frequently.
Any help on suitable replacements for Gator and GoZilla would be appreciated. GoZilla I suppose I could do without, but I have so many passwords on Gator I think I would run into a few problems.
Try unchecking Webhancer, reboot, and see whether AudioGalaxy still works.

You could always put the checkmark back.

A very, very nice Gator replacement: RoboForm

You can even import your Gator data.

Instead of Go'Zilla, try Download Accelerator Plus or GetRight

Good luck,
