OK,
I'm not a novice, but late last week got a new challenge. Have been using McAfee, recently went to Comcast (ISP) versions which are free, and keep DAT's updated, and run Lavasoft and Spybot about 1ce per week.
Daughter, who doesn't have the best net habits, I'll admit, complained of getting knocked off the net, and couldn't get back in. I tried a few things, but system was bogged down to a crawl. Literally - even shutting down - would try to shut down, and 10 minutes later, still not shut down. Boot-ups changed from being about 3-4 minutes to 5-6 minutes, if successful at all. Tried to run McAfee for a scan, and it would lock. Ditto with Lavasoft, but not Spybot. Spybot reported about 30 tracking cookies, which is not unusual, but cleaned them no issue, nothing worse.
Ran HJT, found SpamBlockerUtility, and removed with HJT, but still lots of problems -
Flashlight icon lockup when going into MyComputer
McAfee lockups
Intermittent ability to get to net at all
Extreme slowness to do anything
All without seeing a lot of HD LED flashing
Task manager Performance tab shows low CPU usage - 4-7% mostly, nothing unusual for mem usage.
Tried some online scans in safe mode, and when I could in normal mode - Kaspersky, NAV, and AVG - show no threats except a few tracking cookies. Downloaded AVG, and have finally run that and McAfee in normal mode, with no virus' noted.
Tried to remove HP All-In-One (7210) software, somewhat successfull, but still remnants in processes.
I'm connected now, and running better now, but I'm concerned I haven't really removed the problem
. Note that I have rundll32.exe running, and am using Win2K, which I understand is still potentially indicative of an issue. Sorry for the long thread, but thought I'd give some background. Here's my HJT log, from now:
