Not sure where to post this, so Other Software is as good as any!

AIDA has announced that they are no longer going to develop AIDA32 any further, which is a big pity as this is one of the best pieces of freeware available on the internet

I read the article a few minutes ago. I just started using this utility a few weeks ago and have been real impressed with it. Another good utility going down the tubes. :(

Probably due to cost considerations - as with most companies who release a 'Free' utility with a pay 'Pro' version ... most people will not shell out the cash to upgrade, if the free version does what they want.

I would think that the majority of people who use Zone Alarm Free, Office Suite 602, Gimp, Zoom DVD Player will remain with those cost free applications - for that reason alone.

Surely its the same with TSG itself - people encounter a problem with their pc, scramble round on the net to find free help so they don't have to pay a tech $50 per hour - but don't ever come back again to say thanks - let alone donate.

Anyway for those who want to puruse looking for a comparable utility - might like to check these links :

http://www.sysinternals.com/

http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Utilities/System_Analysis_Utilities/

http://wantdbest.com/freebies/utilities.html

Nothing jumps out as being anywhere near as good as AIDA but there may be a combination of freebie utilities which can collectively offer the same amount of info that AIDA provided on its own.

Looks like Belarc will be the mainstay for most users for now. :(

I think the main point here is that AIDA 32 was the work of one man, Tamas Miklos, not a firm trying to promote a commercial product.

Perhaps, like Patrick Kolla of Spybot, he is just a clever young man who produced something useful and was happy to share it but, he has a life, and may now need to devote his time to earning a living.

I once asked Tamas (Fiery) if I could donate but he said he did not want cash but did want people to e-mail their hardware reports to him so he could keep up to date.

I imagine AIDA will only go out of date slowly as newer hardware becomes available so our copies will be accurate until systems are upgraded.

All of us using these truly free programs (as opposed to trialware) have to be aware that we are on borrowed time with these products and donate what we can afford when asked.

Even then, nothing lasts for ever (except taxes)!

Richard,

Thanks, and the same to you.

I didn't mean my last post to come across quite so fussy as it reads, now that I look at it again, but it is a fact that somebody somewhere at some time, pays for every (apparently) 'free' lunch!

Those of you having withdrawal symptoms from the loss of AIDA could check here;http://www.lavalys.com/index.php?page=view&article=4&selcat=SO

Some posters at that AIDA Forum are suggesting that this is AIDA under another name and that Fiery must have sold the rights to Lavalys. If he did, he was perfectly entitled to do so and noone who used his program for free can complain if he has chosen to cash in on it now.

I haven't checked this program out in any detail so I have no idea if there is anything in this story. However, since its a free d/l, some of you might want to try it.

My computer hasn't been upgraded in years and is unlikely ever to be upgraded, so my copy of AIDA is fine for me.

Togg, the posters may have a point. It looks remarkably similar in both GUI and content!!

putasolution,

Very interesting!! We will have to wait and see, if this is an AIDA 'clone', whether it will be updated regularly and whether it will develop a 'nag' screen to upgrade to the paid version.

It seemed clear from the AIDA Forum that lots of IT professionals were using it to keep track of the state of dozens (if not hundreds) of computers in their care.

Can you tell if the Lavalys free version is adjusted in some way so that it only works on a single machine?

TOGG:

Hello and well said! Your posts enlightened us and summed up the situation sucinctly. I would like to add that as far as Aida32 is concerned, I will continue to use it; just because support or development has ended it doesn't mean the app will suddenly self-delete or stop functioning. Therefore I am not in a panic to rush out and try to find a replacement (I would be amazed if there was another free replacement as comprehensive as this one). I will continue to use Aida32 for some time to come.

Thanks again for your input. :)

pyritechips,

Hello and thanks for the kind words.

I have actually just answered my own question by visiting the Lavalys site which, (as I might have expected if I'd stopped to think), carries a comprehensive 'Features' list making it clear what the different versions of it's programs can, and cannot, do. It looks like the IT pros are out of luck unless they pay!

Lavalys have been offering their Everest program since January so, if it is AIDA under a different name, Fiery would seem to have arranged an overlap period. There is a link to Lavalys at the AIDA website and also to something called 'Motherboard Monitor', a remote admin program and a Hungarian consultancy!

Hello again TOGG:

I shall check out that link shortly.

I have used motherboard monitor in the past. It is a handly little app that can monitor your voltage levels and other useful items such as CPU and board fan RPM's and temperatures. It can show a panel (as below) or put readouts in the system tray:

Ok I have just d/l and run Everest and except for a few minor differences it appears to be a carbon copy of Aida32!

I shall explore it...

Well, it seems clear that, if I ever upgrade this old box (or get a new one), I shall have to try the Everest program.

Until then my current copy of AIDA will be sufficient for my needs because I can just about manage to keep track of my AV definitions and of the software I have installed.

I noticed that the Lavalys site refers to 'low level hardware' info, does the Everest program also include the software details that AIDA did?
