Edge: disable search from address bar

7741 Views 10 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  MusicFan1
Windows 10 Edge browser will not go directly to a URL I type into the address bar. It insists on doing a search, adding the string "www.dnsrsearch.com/index.php?origURL=" in front of the URL I typed. This delivers different results from my original URL. If my address is obsolete I would rather get a 404 error so I know that. Is it possible to turn off or disable "search from address bar"?

You can do it through group policy editor...(unavailable in the Home edition) . .. Unfortunately, I don't know of a way to do it on Windows 10 home.
Oh well... Thanks anyway.
That is nothing to do with Edge but is a service set up by your ISP ( Time Warner / Spectrum) It is intercepting DNS requests & diverting you to its "helpful" service where they make money from the sponsored links on that Yahoo search page
http://www.dnsrsearch.com/index.php?origURL=

you need to change it on the preferences pages
http://www.dnsrsearch.com/prefs.php

Why Am I Here?
You entered an unknown web address that was used to present site suggestions that you may find useful. Clicking any of these suggestions provides you with search results, which may include relevant sponsored links.

If this service is not right for you, please visit your Preferences page to opt out. At any point in time, you can opt back in to the service by visiting your Preferences page.

If you have other questions about this service, please visit our FAQ.
Also open edge settings /advanced settings & scroll down until you see search in address bar & see or change which search engine is used. Default is usually Bing, but I prefer to set Google. However until you disable the Time Warner/RoadRunner/Spectrum divert on your account settings, nothing you do to Edge or any other Browser will make the slightest bit of difference

@Paul23 you really need to be careful what advice you are giving.
If you don't know the answer, don't guess or give wrong or misleading advice. Just don't answer the question.

Derek, Happy Birthday, and THANK YOU! I changed my preferences at http://www.dnsrsearch.com/prefs.php and both my browsers work the way I wanted. I also documented the process and put a link to that in my Favorites bar in case I want to re-enable Spectrum's search function (or forget what I did.) :)
Glad to help. I really don't like these "helpful" services from ISPs or security companies.
"Safe " Search or sponsored search are the spawn of the devil & are just the latest way for an ISP or Security company to make money from sponsored adverts or results.

They are just as bad as the old browser hijackers and has the ability to censor you, stop you looking at information you want and can have serious privacy & security implications.

This is what I thought she was asking about. Since I have made this change myself, I answered the question as good as I was able. Happy birthday! Group Policy Editor: path : Windows settings/ Administrative Templates/ Microsoft Edge == Configure search suggestions in the address bar https://social.technet.microsoft.co...ss-bar-how-to-disable?forum=win10itprogeneral
But you need to read the whole question and work out want she wants. The secret of tech support on a forum is giving the correct answer to the problem. That means reading the entire post fully & carefully and working out what the poster wants to do or solve. Not just assuming that the poster has asked the right thing. Quite often the poster gives incorrect information. In this case she thought she needed to disable search from the URL bar. Doing that wouldn't have made the slightest bit of difference, so telling her how to do it or in this case saying that she can't do it with W10 home doesn't help.
Look at the complete post & interpret it accordingly.
She had a problem with being diverted when typing a url in the URL bar.
That either means a malware problem or in this case the ISP setting up a DNS divert. Simply looking up the url she gave would have told you which one.
Thank you both!
This reminds me of how a Reference Librarian is trained. When a patron asks, "Where are the atlases?" the librarian asks what information they are looking for. Often, it would not be in "the atlases" or whatever reference they think.
