Is there a noticeable difference between a movie encoded on DVD at 8000kb/sec and a lower level such as 5900kb/sec?

The maximum quality level makes it much bigger, which would require a double layer disc so in order to make it fit on 4.7gb it would have to be reduced in bit rate. So I'm wondering if you can really tell the difference. What's the lowest level at which it does become noticeable degraded?

I like the lightscribe discs; I wish they came in double layer.

Try DVDShrink. It is a free download and works great.

Ok...tried that, but it won't let me open .avi files. In Nero I was using movies in avi format which it converted to the proper DVD format.

I guess I almost answered my own question here: I think there is a difference. I played a burned DVD along with the original avi file and switched between them....I do see a difference. The original is much better, almost theatre-like. But I'm not getting that when I burn it to DVD.

I, too, have a similar problem. DVDShrink utilizes a great compression algorithm but I cannot find a similar compression when I burn an .avi file to dvd. If the file is much larger than one hour, Nero says it must use either "standard" or "extended" play. Standard play reduces the quality noticeably and extended play makes the video almost unwatchable. Is there a program which will work like DVDShrink and compress .avi files satisfactorily?

If that is the case then encode in NVE at it's highest setting then run your output through DVDShrink. If the output is too big for Shrink, manually set NVE's bitrate to something lower (use Custom) than it's default high setting of 9716 kb/s, i.e. 8000 kb/s.

The programmer who wrote DVDShrink now works for Nero. If you have the latest Nerovision 4 make sure you set the video settings to automatic fit to disc and High Quality (2 pass VBR). This will give you better results than DVDShrink.

Wrong. Mr. Shrink has adapted many, but not all of his Shrink enhancements to Nero Recode, a transcoder... not NeroVison and encoder. DVDShrink's AEC quality enhancements offer 4 different settings, for different source material and tastes, Recode does not have this option.

I changed the setting in Nero to DVD 9 so I can record larger files without having to reduce the quality. Then I burn the dvd file to my hard drive. I then use DVDShrink to compress (and burn with Nero) the DVD. It works beautifully. Thank you for the help. I hadn't found how to burn to the hard drive in Nero, but when I knew it could be done, I looked harder.

Thanks again for the help. I tried other places, but no luck.

I tried that but didn't really have good luck. I encoded to DVD9 in Nero and saved it to my hard drive, then opened it in DVD Shrink and compressed it, but when I opened that in Nero it still wasn't able to get it on one disc in high quality.

After Shrink you burn the resultant video files, nothing else. There is no High Quality when you burn Shrink's output to a blank.

Use Nero Express to burn the Video Files... period.

I went back and tried it again. I used Nero Vision to transcode the avi video into DVD format and selected DVD9; it said the file size would be around 5.7gb at te highest quality level and I selected to write it to my h/d. But, after it was finished I looked at the files and the total size is only 4.7gb! I should have ended up with a DVD movie on my h/d of 5.7gb. I know I had the highest quality selected, 8000kb/sec - Nero doesn't go any higher than that. I don't know why Nero is compressing it.

I use NeroVision Express 3 and at it's highest qualty setting it uses a bitrate of 9716 kb/s.

Try the free trial of ConvertXtoDVD (it will watermark), set it to it's High/Slow quality setting and to not burn to disc. If you want to burn use Nero Express and use a RW for a test, or click on the VIDEO_TS.IFO for computer viewing. If these AVIs are Xvids they should look about as good as possible at 4.38GB.
