While installing W2K Pro (daughter's w98 old Asus AV7 machine) I am asked for SP4 floppy which I don't have so I skip. Later it says a dll file related to network can't be found. I click ok. Then after install no optical drive is in device mgr. Of course I can't install more software at that point. I've never had this before so I'm stumped. DVD burner is showing up in bios. No other optical drives installed. Any help would be appreciated.

If there is burning software installed -- remove that and later update it.
Since you don't have a "system restore" I would recommend you EXPORT (save) the keys in the registry editor before deleting them. They can be remerged to the registry with a double click if no improvement results. Use the regedit File > Export for that.

Thanks for the quick response! OK, I have nothing installed (no nero/Roxio) because I just did a fresh install of w2k to a new HHD. Imediately after the install I have no optical drive recognized in Device Manager. No error messages except DURING the W2K install the w2k cd asked for service pack 4 on floppy. I don't know what I'm doing in registry items. Or do I just not understand your answer? Thanks, Ted

The problem sometimes happens regardless of Roxio installs -- many things can cause it.
Follow the directions I gave here, but ignore the msconfig > System Restore directions (you don't have that)
Instead when selecting the key which you are going to edit, first click File > Export and save it.

Ok, you say the device is not recognized in the Device Manager--if you run the Add Hardware wizard -- does it detect it?
Also do you want to download and install the sp4 setup? If you need a later service pack, that is what you should do.
By the way, how is this drive connected? Master or Slave? If you have it as slave, do you have the option of connecting it as Master on the secondary IDE?
And -- If you open the Device Manager and look at the IDE/ATA controllers -- do you see both IDEs there without problems?'
Can you see a device connected where the optical drive should be? Look at the Advanced settings -- if there is a device detected you should see the DMA mode in "current transfer mode". If no device is detected you will see "not applicable".
You can try uninstalling the IDE driver on which the Device should be connected -- and reboot.

No, it doesn't detect device in hardware wizard.

#2 how can I load SP4 if I can't get the drive to work. Well, tfaux.dll should be found in the location drive letter\winnt\system32
Where "drive letter" is your boot drive, normally 'c'
Do a search for it and copy it there.
I don't think this error is related to the drive detection though.
Does the drive show up in the disk manager?
run diskmgmt.msc
I'm at a loss to explain this unless there is some issue with the drive cabling, but then I wouldn't expect it to show up in the BIOS.
