DVD Problems: UDMA49

Just fitted a DVD drive to my daughters Celeron 500 PC. It was passed to her when I u/graded. I removed the original DVD drive, ( which worked ok ), and she bought her own to go in it.

The problem is that the video is very jumpy with broken sound. She has 230 mb ram, Nvidia G Force 2 MX 400/64 graphics, and SB 16 sound. also has CDR/W. Running Win XP. UDMA is enabled on both drives.

On Boot up, the info screen shows the CDRW as P4 mode and the DVD as UDMA49, I have tried the DVD as both master and slave on primary and secondary channels, and have connected it using UDMA66 cable. All to no avail.

Is this likely to be a faulty drive?

I would be very grateful if someone could help, as I'm stumped by this problem, and she saved very hard to buy it.
Thanks
