Hi, I downloaded the VLC Media Player to use on my Toshiba Tecra laptop as recommended. Since I wasn't able to use the DVD player before, I figured it might work just as it did for the other users in this forum. After I installed it and rebooted my laptop, I put in a DVD to see what would happen. I recieved a message that said "Disk is not formatted" - "Windows cannot read from this disk. The disk might be corrupted or it could be using a format that is not compatible with windows". If I need a different program to run the DVD player, can someone recommend one? I run Windows XP pro and it has a 700mhz processor. Thank you for any advice. Michael.

I'm running XP Pro. The laptop is a Tecra 8100 which was bought almost 2 years ago, used, on ebay. It didn't come with any cd's. It had Windows 98 installed and I reformatted the hard drive to install Windows XP. The cd works with no problems. About six months ago I tried to watch a DVD and the drive would spin and make a few noises but eventually it would stop and nothing else would happen. Everything works well except for the DVD drive.

hmmm is this a CD/DVD drive combo or 2 seperate ones.I would google for WMP 10-11 and see if you can play the DVD if not then I would suspect the Drive it self is bad

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/alldownloads.aspx where it says version select 10 as 11 is beta and does not work right. See if it will let you play the DVD.I would also try a few other dvds as some are lighter or harder to read by the computer for some reason if you still get a error then I would maby suspect the drive

This laptop has a cd/dvd combo drive. The outside of the drive has the dvd logo on it. In the device manager it shows the dvd drive and says that it is working properly. I tried different tabs in the dvd folder, but nothing made it work. The last time that I put the dvd in the drive, a window opened that asked which program would I like to use to see the dvd. I chose the Windows Media player. WMP didn't recognise the dvd. I'll try to install WMP 10 and see if that works. If not then I'll toss out this drive and get another one!

Does it work with any other dvds? Try one that's not a Disney dvd.
There's a thread going at AfterDawn, that a lot of people are starting to have trouble with Disney dvds. That one and Cars. A friend of mine has a Sony standalone player that won't play Lady & the Tramp, or Bambi II.

Disney is putting so much on their discs, in the name of copy protection, that they are creating problems for a lot of people. If people can't play their movies, they'll quit buying them! They're hurting themselves more than anything. Disney knows about the problems, from all the complaints.

Something you can try.........it's helped some folks here, and some it hasn't. It's worth a try.......
Go into your Device Manager, and find your dvd drive. Right click on it, and choose "Uninstall". After it uninstalls, reboot, and let Windows detect new hardware, and install a new driver for you.
Good luck!

Does anyone know anything about the Upper and Lower filters in the registry. I don't but HP had me either change or delete these filters when mine wouldn't work. But I cannot remember how and I think it was to delete them.
