DVD playback

i have built a htpc out of my desktop. it has an AMD 1.2 ghz, 16x DVD, and ATI all in wonder 8500 with 64mb video card. my problem is that in order to connect to the tv i have to go through my VCR. my dvd playback has the occasional choppy section, but the biggest pain is that the brightness/color fades in and out. it goes from normal to really dark to really light. is there anyway to stop this. it doesnt happen when i am able to use the S-video connection

For help with particular issues surrounding DVD Playback perhaps check out this site :

They have forums like this for most related subjects.
usually when you get fading in and out it is due to macrovision protection......this is due to going through your vcr.....is there no way to hook directly to your tv???
no. unfortunatly my tv only has a coaxial input and the video card doesnt output through the coax.
you say you have no problem when you connect the s-video......is this s video from computer directly to the tv? or s video to vcr? If you dont have a problem with the svideo ant you use that ???i guess I am confused a bit here
the s-video is not to my tv. i was simply saying that when i tried it on another tv it worked fine like that. i am just trying to see if there is a way to get around it through the vcr
as said before, it is macrovision protection kicking in. try a dvd without macrovison to double check, best bet is a newer tv, unfortunately.
