My first '?' to all, I have a Dell Latitude 100L it is supposed to have a DVD burner/player installed at my request.

My order says I have a -- M5805 Module, Digital Video Disk Drive Read Write, 8x, Sony
Abacus, Latched Address what ever in the puter. Is this It? I can play DVD's, play & burn CD's, but puter will not recognize a DVD in tray, or says, disc already has something on it, or, it'll say insert a blank disc.

I'd like to tx some of my videos stored in puter to a dvd, (if I can select a group of them to put on 1 disc) and clear up some room on my puter. DEll tells me I have a DVD player/burner installed, but won't help me activate it. Real Player, Quicktime, WinDVD4,or Windows Media Player are of no help in DVD mode, but OK in CD. If I had any hair left, I'd be pulling it out. Being a beginner is of no solace to me....

Welcome,

That model of PC came with a choice one with a DVD writer and one with a DVD reader

to find out which you have download this free utility EverestHome to your Desktop and Right click on it and Extract All then open the folder and install it.

It will load up and click on Computer in the right hand window then summary

Tell us what it says about your CD/DVD drive.

Even easier.................double click on "My Computer". The window that opens should tell you, if it's a burner, or just a rom drive. If it's a burner, it will be labeled "DVD-RW Drive".
You can also right click on the drive, and choose properties, and then choose the "Hardware" tab. If it's a burner, it will list the brand it is, and say "DVD-RW" beside it.
If it says DVD Rom Drive, it's not a burner.

If it is a burner, try a different brand of DVD blanks. Stay away from Memorex!

WinDVD is a dvd player, not a burning program.
Roxio is your burning program. Read the "Help" in Roxio, to learn how to use it. You may need to go to their site, and find a manual for it. Not sure about it. I use Nero.

Ok, If I'm lucky, I can burn DVD+R, & RW's ! Will this also work on th new +/- DVD's?

Do I also need to worry about the Speed (2.4x, 4x, 8x. etc.) ?

its best to go with multy speed disks. Are you talking about the speed of the burner.this is what companys don't want you to know.you may think its buring at 52 times all the time. But the truth is when it starts its burning at like 12 times untill it gets to the outter edge of the cd then it burns faster to keep up with the rest of the process.so your fine just use multy speed disks that can handle the speed

I was talking to my nieghbor about all this, we're at about the same knowledge level, next to nothing!! But he handed me a DVD his brother burned for him, his puter doesn'y like it much, and it skips and jerks in his puter.
It's a Verbatim, DVD-recordable, 4.7 GB 120min, 16x certified and it plays great in my puter ! It player in WinDVD, what do I need to do to rip & burn it as a test for me & my system ??

Depending on the movie, purchase copy rights.

Been searching things on my puter, opening, looking, but, changing NOTHING!!

Got into an area called "Systems Info" looked in here and found out that it looks as though my " DVD+RWDW-R56A" is a CD-ROM thingy, not a burner,

DELL shafted me on this (replacement) puter, as well as the Original purchaced puter...
Orig. one went belly up just on the warranty deadline, I raised enough H--- with them that they send me this one as replacement. Battery doesn't work right, but it's not on recall list, so live with it, or BUY a new one. Ever have a batt. take priority over AC, with AC plugged in? So I pull batt. out use AC only, and every couple of months slide batt. in. As soon as batt. is re-chgd. it kick AC off line. Guess I'll dig up Betty's old h/p laptop, and use it.

(Yeh, had a DELL service rep. make a house call to tell me old puter was belly up, and helped me get new one.)

OOPPSS, on my last!!! MoMMA SAYS no way TO SWAPPING PUTER's ! S'ok by me now, before she said no, I checked the hp out, it has a CDROM unit, nothing about a DVD burner. It's also a dif. SONY system.

I've sgned up for the newsletter, so will keep up with & maybe learn some things.

But, Unless some one else has a magic wand they can fwd. guess I'll just have to be happy with what I've got, Thanks for all the HELP, even if we couldn't overcome my DUMBNESS about puters.

Will keep this site in my FAV's, who knows, I might need you guy's again.
