I bought the EMPREX DVD DUAL DVD+/- R, RW INTERNAL DRIVE a little over a month ago at FRY'S. It's been working great. Been using I COPYDVDS 2 software. No problems. Then last week I noticed that the burner was getting errors. Before it would burn or after. So that would waste a DVD. Well, it got worse real fast. Now it will play DVDs and read DVDs to copy. But it won't write or if it does it screws up during the burning and leaves me with a bad DVD. I've reinstalled the burning software several times but no good. It seemed to have helped before before last week. Not anymore. I'm not sure if the drive has gone bad already or if there's something wrong with the software. So many questions! My OS is 2000.

1) What are the error messages you get?

2) Did the problem start just after buying a new batch of blank DVD's? If so you may have a bad batch or your burner may not like that particular brand.

3) You dont mention your model number but Check Here to see if either of these firmware updates apply(click on driver download).

Error messages such as WRITING ERROR. Now I'll burn a DVD. I can see on the drive that I'm getting a red light while it burns instead of a green one. Not the DVD's. It started just before I finished my first stack. I bought 3 more packs since then. I've tried DVDs from each pack. Not looking good. I think this DVD burner is crap already. What do you think?

I would try the firmware update if it applies and if it doesn't help I would probably see about exchanging the burner to see if it solves the problem.

if it is only a month old it should be under warranty take it back
