When I insert a dvd-rw into my dvd burner and try to erase the dvd, it says it cannot erase this type (DVD-ROM), but the dvd is in fact a dvd-rw type.

Now I have tried different media, some new and some old, changed burning programs, and changed dvd writers, none which has fixed the error.

Sometimes after inserting the media, and having the burning program eject it, and me inserting it again several times, it will then recognize it as dvd-rw and start to erase it, but not always.

Any one seen this before?

rw discs require packet writing software on your machine,
then any file manager should be able to do read/write.

see if that is still running. maybe remove and reinstall it.

i've had rw media written by one packet software,
readable but not writeable or eraseable with
another packect software running. could read
and copy contents then reformat and it worked
rw fine. so like a rw disc made with roxio could
be read with nero on the machine but not erased.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I tried imgburn as suggested by MysticEyes and it seems to work good :)

johnpost, could you give me an example of packet writing software that might be on my computer? I had Alchohol %120 installed, but removed it, as well as Nero. I'm using a free dvd burning software called CDBXP.

I have no packet writing installed and use re-writables, CD and DVD, all the time.

Then it might be problem with whatever burning app you are using.

nero supplies InCD for doing RW.

it is a separate install from nero

it would be in Ahead subdirectory in Program Files subdirectory
on your root drive in windows

in My Computer right clicking on dvd drive, when rw media
is present will have InCD format and InCD Erase as functions
that can be done on media.

Can I ask a basic question backing up a bit, have you first formatted the dvd-rw disks?
Yes. Some of the disks that were giving me trouble have been used many times. But come to think of it, the new ones I have tried worked the first time, and then subsequently would show as DVD-ROM instead of DVD-RW.

Nero supplies InCD for packet writing, it has nothing to do with the ability to burn RW's.
