So I got an external DVD burner a few weeks ago. This one. Well, before I went on vacation I tried it out. I burned a DVD just fine using Nero but now that I've come back it seems to have a problem.

Now it gets through transcoding and asks me to insert a blank DVD. I was thinking maybe I still had one with somethin on it in there so I popped it out, put in another blank, and it still says to insert a blank. For some reason it's not reading the DVD!

Interestingly enough when the disc tray it out the computer reads it as a DVD Burner but when it's in place it reads it as just a CD-ROM. Visual aid:

I'm running Windows XP Home SP2. I completely uninstalled all of the drivers and software for the drive and reinstalled it to no avail. Help!

Regardless of what type of disc I insert (burned CD, burned DVD, official DVD, mini CD, blank CD, blank DVD) it always reads the drive as a CD-ROM. All of my software has been updated.

I don't have my receipt and some of the original packing material is missing. It worked once so I ditched the stuff. :( I think when I have some extra cash I'll take it to a local thing that's like the Geek Squad at Best Buy and have them figure it out.

Nothing against your idea of having Best Buy look at it but we all know they don't do things for free....

Even if they only charge $40 to troubleshoot (call ahead to find out what you'll be charged) - that's almost half of the drive's price....

If I were you I'd go and talk really politely to a WM manager and explain...you'll never know.

The Geek squad will charge more than the drive is worth! If you're going to spend that kind of money, just buy a new DVD-RW drive, they can be had for around $30 on-line.

Of course, maybe we can also help you get it running, that's what the charter of TSG is all about! :D

Start by downloading Nero InfoTool and posting a screen shot of the Drive page.
