Aloha,
I burned some cartoon .avi files for my son and it plays ok on the dvd burner and reader dvd but I cannot play it on the DVD/CD vcr player. I used a DVD-R disk and burned it using my plextor burner using the Roxio Easy CD & DVD
creator using the data disk option. The vcr dvd/cd player says that it has "the ability to play back, may depend on recording conditions". DVD-R, DVD+RW, -RWc and CD-RW. Any suggestions? TIA

When you say it does not play on the DVD player, do you mean that the player does not recognise the disk at all? If so, its a case of not liking the media.

Some DVD players are very fussy about recorded media, preferring some brands over others. Its all to do with the reflectivity. Burning media often has lower reflectivity that stamped (original) media and DVD lasers do not always see the media well.

Here is a nice resource for you to look at.

They even list most DVD players and users tell what luck they have had playing DVD-R and DVD+R media etc etc etc.

usually experimenting with the Media will lead to finding out which is best for your home DVD players.

Aloha Dave,
Thanks for the reply and I don't know if it will support avi but I do know that it will not support VCD according to the manual. What kind of software do you use for your burner?? The software that came with my Plextor (Roxio easy cd & dvd creator doesn't give me any options such as vcd) doesn't look like I can change anything. TIA

The actual file format is mpg for Video CD, and it WILL be supported. The program I use is AVI2VCD, which is freeware and as far as I am concerned, the easiest and quickest to use. You will have to create it on disk first.
I don't have EasyCD, but I would think it should have a builtin convertor.

Doogdoog, it sounds like you just burned an avi onto a dvd and tried playing it. If this is true, then you need to convert the file to be playable on your DVD player just as you would convert for VCD.

If your burner came with Roxio Easy CD & DVD, the try DVD Builder, it comes with a tutorial if you need it, but looks like it accepts avi's and will convert for playing on DVD players.

Hope this helps,

Aloha MustBNuts,
Thanks for the reply and yes, I did burn some avi onto a dvd. I will take a look at the dvd builder again and try it out. I also downloaded an avi2vcd converter but I couldn't get it to work for me but will try again on that too. TIA
