The problem mentioned below has been solved--{for now}
....I solved it by unplugging the modem power cord for 15-20 seconds
==========================
.everything was goin just fine....then computer freezes...I shut down,restart, and it freezes again when I tried to open the second window.
it hasn't froze again but ever since the freeze my browser--{IE 6 using DSL}--has been extreeeemly slow----{2 to 3 times slower than dial-up even}
...Care to 'opine' ?? {What's causing this?}

Not real sure about the freezing up thing, but I recently had a problem with very slow download speeds...my upload speed was normal. (I ran a speed test with www.dslreports.com). Anyway..it ended up it was my DSL modem. Swapped it with another and all is well now. Not really sure that will fix your problem, but just thought I'd offer my solution.
