I've got AT&T DSL, which is on all the time. Nevertheless, after turning on the computer for the day, if I don't actively use the Internet for a while (about a half hour), I lose my connection. In order to reconnect I've had to restart the computer. What program fluke may be causing the computer to disconnect like this? What can I do to ensure that I stay connected? AT&T says it's not caused by them, and I've verified this to be true. I've contacted Compaq, but the guy in India has no solution. I've run Norton virus scan, Spybot, and Spysweeper, all of which indicate that I'm not infected with any malware. My operating system is: XP updated with Service Pack 2 and all subsequent critical updates.

Welcome to TSG....

Have you tried having AT&T re-installing the DSL connection network settings and also re-install the DSL router?

See if you have this option.
Start> Run> type: devmgmt.msc then hit OK.
Go to your network adapter and click the + and on your listed adapter, right click and select
Properties. If you have a Power Management tab, uncheck the box:
Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.

I just tried Augie65's solution. I'll see if it works after discontinuing my use of the Internet.

Not sure if this will help but I had that problem with BellSouth DSL when I first got it. I called them and found out my modem was actually set to do that. I had to log onto it with the IP they gave me and change it to an 'always on' setting. If the other suggestions don't work you might try calling support and checking if this is true with your modem.

Once again the Internet disconnected, and I had to restart the computer to get back on line and leave this message. Unfortunately, Augie65's solution didn't work. Also, regarding Billy the Adult's suggestion, the modem is already set to "always on." I don't think the problem lies with the hardware or physical connections, but with some quirk in the software or settings. Anyone have any other ideas on how this connectivity problem might be fixed? Thanks.

I will be following this with great interest because the almost identical event happens to me. But I do not have to reboot to reconnect. I get a message box to work off line or try again or some such words. And Bell South replaced my modem with a new one that their tech installed and set up. This has been going on for months and Bell South has been of no help; except for what they physically did in October 2006 hoping to cure my problem. I seldom even call their techs any more. Can't usually understand their broken English.

EDIT: I think my ISP is conserving bandwidth when their software detects my computers idle and cut me off. I am paying for "always on" and I would hope to be able to stay connected without interference.

Buf, you may be right that it's a bandwith conservation issue, but if so, I'd think more folks would be having the problem. By the way, I see that you're now an AT&T customer thanks to approval of the Bell South merger. But I digress, anybody out there have any other ideas on how to solve the pesky disconnect problem? I would be truly grateful for any help.

Do you have all of the line filters for the telephone lines connected on all of the telephones?

Don't know if the merger with AT&T is good or not. Good if things improve; immaterial if not!! And to think the U.S. Govt. busted up these bells years ago

I talked to a friend that had this happen too.. and did most everything you tried and never got it to stop. He even got BellSouth to swap out his modem. So he backed up, formatted and re-installed Windows. The mysterious problem went away without ever knowing what the culprit was that caused it. One thing you might try before going to that extreme though is if you have access to a laptop or another computer that you can connect to your modem and just leave it connected for a day or so and see if it disconnects too.. that way you would at least know if the problem was your pc or your DSL provider.

Ozrom1e: Line filters are connected on all telephones.

Billy the Adult: That's an interesting suggestion. I'm going to try it, but it may take a while to find somebody who'll loan me their laptop for a day. I hate the thought of having to re-install XP, all the other programs and updates. Aarrgghh! In the mean time, any other potential solutions anybody may have would be most welcomed.

My DSL is through Earthlink, and I have always had the same prob. If I am idle too long, I'll need to reboot. I too got Apu in india (said his name was Mark....) who tried to walk me through some process of manually imput a new IP but he had no idea what Iwas talking about.....Once i did this I had NO connectivity. Ended up resetting the modem and going back to my default settings. I am certain this is either a glitch or Windows setting, because whenever i have reinstalled Windows (XP Home) this issue persists. However, same system, under Linux never once has it happened.

For a temporary workaround until you can fix the problem, you can make a batch file containing the following line:
cmd /C "ping -n 1 earthlink.net"

Then use Task Scheduler to run it every 20 minutes. I said "temporary workaround" because you'll be annoyed with a command window popping open for a second every 20 minutes.

The laptop may be a good idea but what I described in post #8 occurs on my three (3) computers; 2 running XP and 1 running XP Home.
Thanks Frank4d but I'll pass on the popup workaround.

Just for testing purposes, download one of the free Linux distros that can run off the CD. Two that I would recommend for ease of use would be Mepis or Freespire. D/l, burn .ISO to a CD(RW) and reboot. Runs off the CD so no install to you HD. It'll take about 2-3 minutes to boot this way tho, but nothing else to do. Once it loads the desktop, open a browser (Firefox) and see if you still have this problem. I can almost gaurentee you won't. If you do, you know for sure it's your hardware. If not, it's Windows.
Mepis (I like better) ftp://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/mepis/released
The second from the bottom is "SimplyMEPIS_6.0_i386.iso"
When it loads you'll get a login menu. Select ROOT on the left side of the dialogue and the password is "root"

or
Freespire http://wiki.freespire.org/index.php/Download_Freespire

There might be a better way to test this...no one else has mentioned one tho, and it's pretty easy. Good luck.
