Drives D:\ and E:\ are missing.

My name is Jessica and I a major problem problem (or so it seems to me). This is quite a long story as to how it happened, but here's how I'll start.
My computer information:
Name: Dell
Processor: Intel Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz
Processor Speed: 2.34 GHz
Memory: 128 MB
OS: Windows XP Home
Operating System: Version 5.1.2600
Great, now that that's out of the way. I have intermediate computer knowledge, so I won't be completely ignorant, but if this relates to something really complex, please use.. baby steps just so I won't get confused. i.e. if this involves registry key. Thanks.
Okay, as far as my problem. I found an unknown CD in my backpack and decided to try to open it. I first went to "My Computer" and was looking for my D:\ or E:\ drive. Well, guess what? They were'n there. I only had my C:\, my shared folders, and my A:\ drive. Yes, I panicked and tried going to the little "Dell Support Center" and I followed the directions. They said something along the lines of going to the Device Manager, uninstalling both drives, and reinstalling them. Well, I opened up Device Manager like they said, and I found both drives listed with a little yellow exclamation mark by them. When I tried to re-install them, there was a little balloon at the bottom of my screen that said "Found CD-RW" then "Found CD-R" but then it says, "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39) Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device." Great. I tried restarting and that didn't work, either. I also tried going online to look for help. I read a related article that this guy on here had a missing D:\ and F:\ drive and decided to check that out. His problem was fixed by going to this: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;%5BLN%5D;q314060. I went there as well and it involved opening my registry key. They told me to locate this: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} and delete the "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters". Say what? So then I searched for this certain key and saw it! However, there were also 24 other occurances of this same key. What do I do? I don't think each one of them has the "UpperFilter - LowerFilter" location, but I'm not sure if it's safe to delete all of those.
Here's some background history on what I think may have happened.
I downloaded and installed this nice looking little program called "ErrorGuard". It had a nice interface and seemed to favor XP's security center. I thought it was affiliated w/ Microsfot, so I used it, and it detected over 7,000 errors. Well, genius me thought I had that many errors, so I pressed the repair button and was just sitting there while it was destroying my files and I had no earthly idea that that's what it was doing at the time. Well, it had been going for about 10 minutes, and I was like, "Gee, this is taking a bit long... I think I may have detrimented my computer." Wow. I stopped it. I decided to look up some info on it and read that it was a CON program and it can CRASH your system. Damn it. I went to see if there were back-ups and there was, but someone said to get rid of the application IMMEDIATELY, so I restored some of my things and there were a crapload of registry keys that had been taking out of my registry. Also, I minimized my AOL screen (my internet that I use) and looked at my desktop. Holy ****ola, I only had 9 icons out of like 30 that I did have before. Just great. This is when I tried to restore my files, but I got impatient and just deleted the application... with my back-up. :\ Please don't laugh at me, I'm not usually THAT ignorant. I swear. It was really late and I should have never used a program I knew nothing about. THANKS A LOT ERRORGUARD.
Sorry that this is so long and monotonous. I am really appreciative if you read this whole thing. Thank you so much, even if you don't answer my problem. This means a lot to me. I really want my drives back and I hope it doesn't require technical maintenance. :\ Once again, thanks guys for any solution you may have.
