For the past week, DNS does not seem to be working correctly on my connection. it isn't consistently broken, it seems like it's random whether i can resolve for a certain site or not. i know my internet is working fine because if i enter an IP directly it has no problem reaching the site. the issue is when i type an address in, it tells me it can't be resolved for the IP. i've been trying to work around this by getting my friends to ping certain sites for me, but it's very tedious and my parent's computer which uses the same cable and router as mine is having the same problem and they're not very computer savvy. please tell me what y ou think the source of the problem is and how to fix it! thanks in advance.

for reference:
- syslink router
- rca cable modem
- comcast digital cable
- windows XP
- mozilla firefox

Try switching DNS servers. Your ISP probably provides you with at least 2.

An alternative, which will prevent this from occurring in the future, even when the DNS server is down completely, is to run your own DNS server.

There are a number of good ones available. TreeWalk is a popular one that is free. It used too much CPU on my machine, but others don't seem to have that problem with it, so maybe it's just my machine. It can be set up as the DNS server for your entire network. Connections can be much faster if you have a slow server now.

Simple DNS Plus is one of the most popular pay ones. That works very well, too. I only changed from it for variety :D.

The one I use now is the open source Posadis. It seems so far to work very well. It's a bit more difficult to configure than some others, but for simple DNS, it works good right out of the box.

SANS is a simple, authoritative Windows DNS server produced by Posadis that you can set up with a few mouse clicks. Latest version out this month.
