No, don't scan for altered files, but choose 'Extract one file from Installation Disk' to restore Mfc42.dll.

Read the article I provided you with.

As for User.exe, don't have SFC restore it.
First, SFC is often wrong when it reports it as'corrupted', and sometimes when you use System File Checker to restore a Windows 98 system file like User.exe, the wrong version of the file can be extracted result in the inability to start Windows 98 or you will receive protection errors.

Just restore Mfc42.dll as described.

Good luck,

followed your suggestion to the letter but in using both cdroms get the message "file not found". I am tempted to use the diagnostics & recovery cd and reinstall. I can back up my files but would have to reinstall a lot of software and it would take quite a bit of time. any suggestions?you are helping an 80 yr old. did you watch "band of brothers"?really got to me!

I'm afraid that's extremely unlikely.

But not to worry, I'm running Win98SE, and send you my mfc42.dll all zipped up. It's version 6.00.8665.0, which is the latest version, and should be OK for WinME as well.
You will probably need to go into Safe Mode in order to be able to unpack it to C:\Windows\System.

Once in Safe Mode, first rename your own C:\Windows\Mfc42.dll to Mfc42.old (just change the extension).
That way yours will not be overwritten, but will remain at your disposal.

Good luck,

Bill, did you try searching for the file mfc42.dll. When I tried it I found that I had 3 copies of it at one time. One is an Iomega file and one is an AVG file. Could it be that you have more than one? If you do that could be your problem. Just go to search and be sure to click advanced, check all folders. If you find more than the one in the system folder, rename the others something you can remember. I renamed mine mfc42.dlm, so that I can rename them dll if I have to. So far I haven't had to.

Success! I downloaded musiccity and never saw the message "Error Sarting Program" mfc42.dll missing. Is there any freeware program for burning cd's? Tried musicmatch but get the message "a Device is Missing" and in burning cd's it stops about halfway through the program. Will burn about 1/2 the songs on the playlist and then state that an error has occurred and wipes out the files. Thanks for the help
