Lately, my display properties window takes at least 5 or 6 seconds to open and I don't know why. Before, it used to open instantly. I deleted all my pictures and the problem still remains.

Any ideas ?

Thank you

Have you defragged lately ? If not do so then if it doesn't cure itself we can have a look at the running processes on your system.
Download 'Hijack This! http://www.spychecker.com/program/hijackthis.html
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the " scan " button will change into a " save log " button.
Press that, save the log , load it in Notepad, and copy its contents here. Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

OK, I'll do that. First I will try to defragment because I will admit it has been a while since I did it. If it doesn't change anything I will download your program.

Thank you

Nothing to do with defragmentation. I scanned my computer with Hijackthis and here is the scan log you requested:

(Note that you can still see something to do with my old Lexmark printer. I uninstalled it and I'm using a Canon printer now.)

There does not appear to be any malware there, though I do not know what this program does:

O4 - Startup: Aide mémoire.lnk = ?
C:\Program Files\Aide mémoire\Aide mémoire.exe

If you can put a time frame on when this issue began, you might find an easy fix using System Restore. Any installs or settings changes implemented following the restore date will be undone, but nothing added to My Documents will be lost.

You may also want to give a "clean-boot" troubleshooting test a shot:

Does the Device Manager show more than one Display adapter? For example an onboard, integrated one and an external, installed one? If there are two, make sure the unused one is disabled.

If you don't think System Restore is a viable option, try removing and reinstalling the current drivers, or update them.

I'm sorry but I have no idea where to find the Display adapter. I have a french computer so I'm not familiar with that term. I have looked in the Device Manager and seen nothing resembling that term.

I just noticed that there is something else lagging. When I want to delete Internet Explorer history, even if I just deleted everything, it will still work for a while.

I'm beginning to suspect my whole system ain't exactly powerful enough for Windows XP. I have a 900 mhz AMD Athlon processor with 384 Mb of RAM. I have an old graphic card of 8 Mb (though it never gave me any problems before and I don't play games).

What do you think ?

I don't know what the French for it is, but here is how you get to the Device Manager, see attachment.

You haven't told me when you think this problem began and whether System Restore is an option for you.

I don't think the processor speed would be a big factor on just that one properties page. And if you are not playing games, the display card memory itself probably doesn't make much difference either. If XP was not the original installation though, you probably need to update the drivers to make it fully XP compatible.

I already know of the Device Manager. I only want to know what is the Display adapter.

I can't really make a system restore because I don't precisely know when the problem started.

The drivers are all updated too.

Another thing. How do you get a picture of a window like you did ?
