When I click on display it tells me that the system administrator locked the control panel. I'm the system administrator.. never locked it. Tried shift and right click though denies me still... any ideas what it could be? Thanks in advance:confused:

Do you have Spybot Search & Destroy installed? If so, open it, go to the Immunize section, scroll to the bottom of the right-hand pane and uncheck the reference to the Control Panel.

I don't believe Spybot can lock the "Control Panel" as such, or Display properties, just certain IE options that are referred to as an IE Control panel.

Run regedit and have a look in the following keys for this or similar restrictions:

User Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\
System]
System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\
System]
Name: NoDispSettingsPage
Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value: (0 = disabled, 1 = enabled)

thank god! The NoDispSettingsPage was already set to 0 in the regedit. Though NoDispCPL was set to 1. Once I changed it to 0 I was able to access the control panel. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

Yeah, that would be the one alright, it disables the display option all together; I just stopped looking when I got to the general area.

Glad to help.

By the way, there are some worms out there, mainly spread through file sharing networks, that place these restrictions, and others.

So if this just appeared for no apparent reason, you should do a full system scan with the latest definitions.

You might even want to copy/paste a Scanlog here for review. (use HijackThis).

right on.. thanks again for helping me out. This is probably the best forum I know of where everyone knows what they're talking about and aren't too busy to lay down some advise. Much respect - DN

Although it's true that Spybot is only supposed to lock access to IE's Options, I've encountered two systems so far where it locked access to the Control Panel as well. I suggested looking there first since it's the simplest to check.
