Disk Password

Hello everyone, I’ve run into an issue recently. I decided to download a Mac update that I had been putting off for a bit and it immediately ran into issues and I attempted to access recovery mode to try and trouble shoot. However, I ended up getting a screen which asks for a disk password (which I never created) so I took my laptop to a tech support company (they referred me to an Apple store) at the store I was told that I had to have created the password and they couldn’t help me. I have been searching online and trying everything I can find with no success. I would greatly appreciate some help I have all of my files from 4 years of college on this Mac. Thank you to anyone who can assist!!

Hello! Please note that we do not assist in circumventing passwords. Having said that, the disk password appears to be in conjunction with FileVault, which Apple's encryption service. If this was set up correctly, you should be able to use your username and/or password, or at least an account that is an administrator.

If you set it up using File Fault, then Apple does not have a copy of your pw. When you set up File Fault, you were given a pw or key, that's the only way to get into your MAC at the moment.
An understandable solution. The only issue is, I only started using FileVault after this issue started and the password I used to set it up doesn’t work either.

Unless I am misreading you, why did you set up File Vault after you started having the issue? To set up File Vault, you would need a administrative pw.

If your File Vault pw is not working, there is literally nothing you can do.
