You don't say what OS or version of IE you are using, but I understand that XP SP2 users have a pop up blocker built into their version of IE.

If you are using an older version of IE, have a look at this article about configuring it and disabling its most harmful functions; https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/btw/ie/ie-opts.htm As far as I am aware, you can't actually 'disable' it completely.

The article makes it clear that it doesn't cover IE6 SP2, but it does provide links to details about the changes that were made.

I will leave it to others more advanced than I to help you with the popups (run the usual stuff...spybot, lavasoft, hijack this). I wouldn't recommend disabling or uninstalling IE for the mere reason that some sites still arent fully compatible with firefox. Fix it if you can, and leave it in the background for a rainy day ;)

There are some unapproved third party tools which claim to be able to uninstall IE (at least up to IE 5.0), but, since it's an integral part of your OS, it wouldn't be a very good idea to try!

As rpndt1 said, there are many sites which still demand IE (unfortunately) and, even if you have one of the old OS's like me (98/ME), you will need IE to get updates (until June!).

If you are getting pop-ups when IE is closed then there is a good chance there is spyware on the machine.

Go to these sites

SpywareBlaster http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
AdAware SE http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html
SpyBot S&D http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/

DL them (they are free), install them, check each for their definition

updates and then run AdAware and Spybot, fixing anything they say.

THen run HiJack This http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html and post a log - DO NOT FIX anything
