[Passion]

I have a friend who has picked up some sort of virus/hijacker. It's shutting down her machine. I have her log of Hijack This.. she can't remember the exact name of the virus... but thinks it came up as "about:blank" a hijack...

PC is a HP Pavilion, Intel, Pentium IV, CPU 1500 MHZ, 1.49 GHZ, 256... running on Windows XP... Enclosed here is her Hijack This log. Please see if there is anything she can do.

I need to add here now that her system has been sending out e-mail on it's own.. as we spoke last night I received two in a row... which she told me she hadn't sent.

Her system has been slowed to a crawl and she has been unable to open any programs.

There are some other options on our Security Help Tools post, including a downloadable version from Trend called their Micro Damage Cleanup service, you might give that a try since it doesn't require you to be online.

By the way, is the XP firewall enabled in that system? Failure to do so, combined with the absence of recent blaster version patches can cause the shutdown problem even when there is no current evidence of infection, especially if the system happens to be networked.

Make sure a firewall is enabled before trying to download anything.

Also what happens when she tries to open a program? Any error message?
