My desktop will not continue to load, it has wallpaper but no Icons, no start button. I can not right click on it. It only has my wallpaper. I can still access most of my programs by going to the Task Manager & they run fine.

But I can't find Recycle Bin. I see other items on desk top in Task Manager but not Recycle Bin. I did move somethings to the recycle bin which obviously was not a good idea that I would like to be able to drag out.

I tried starting in SAFE mode but all I get is a black screen with the words safe mode in the corner.

I have a Dell 8400 that uses XP Any thoughts on how I can get my Desktop to continue to load? Start Button? find Recycle Bin?

Welcome,

Open Task Manager click the Applications tab......click bottom right New Task type cmd click OK

In the Command Prompt type chkdsk /r click Enter key

You will be asked if you want a check disk to run on next startup click Y and then press Enter

Restart your PC

Thanks for the suggestion, I did run chkdsk /r at your suggestion, It came up that it was complete & all ok. I am receiving a message that says diskette Drive 0 seek failure. I am not for sure which happened 1st the diskette failure or the not loading desktop. I can still access files through Task Manager, but am still very "clueless" at what to try next.

If you can get in Windows Explorer, you can reach the Recycle Bin there. ( Ususally at the bottom ) Right click on the file and restore it.

I have tried repairing Windows XP with the install CD. It did not appear to do anything. After awhile it came up & said Type exit to exit & restart your machine. When the computer restarted it looked the same as always. I do not have a start button, recycle bin, nor does Windows explorer appear to be working. I can however, threw task manager get on the internet, access programs. I have tried different scans Registry, virus, but all comes up ok.

While booting there is a line that comes up that says "diskette drive 0 seek failure" I do not know if this is a separate issue or the cause of the problem above. If anyone has any suggestions or steps to help me figure out the issue

The problem seemed to start when I tried to remove a couple of programs from the start menu. SO I attached a startup list to this reply, but of course it doesn't look like anything to me.

I can't make a dicision of what to try next. I have some ability on the cumputer now & would hate to loose the little I have.

You have a faulty or improperly inserted diskette, incorrect configuration settings in System Setup program, loose diskette/tape drive interface cable, or loose power cable.This could be a floppy drive with a loose cable or a hard drive with same. Last resort is a dying hard drive as well.
