OS W98SE, since upgrading to IE5.5sp2 my desktop shortcut icons plus the MSN setup icon randomly change to the white piece of paper with the window logo. It seems to happen sporadically when closing a window within windows explorer, find, etc. I do a reboot or IE repair and they return to normal for awhile.

I have found several articles referencing the shellIconcache as the culpert although not the exact syptoms. The articles say to delete the shellIconcache file in Safe Mode. As I am a very cautious person when it comes to deleting system files, my question is "Has anyone else experienced this problem?" and in your expert opion do you think this is the route to take?

I appreciate your input, thanks in advance.

Yes, that's the article. I have already run housecall, just today and my Norton's AV is and always is up todate.

The way I understand it, the shellIcon cache will be rebuilt upon normal startup. I have never worked in safe mode so am a little apprehensive. I did a find on shellIconcache and it was modified 9-18-01. I'm not sure what that means. Have run SFC and no problems there. I keep a log of any major changes I make and can find nothing with that date. I did the IE5.5sp2 upgrade 8--10-01, and the problem started 8-21-01.
