Desktop bug

I can not get rid of this desktop bug that puts a search window in the lower right part of my screen. It pops up and down and trys to send me to a virus removal site. I know this has to be a trojan but my McAfee or Ad-ware will not recognize it. Through searching I narrowed the file down to this
c:/Windows/isrvs/desktop.exe

I am new to this process so please help me if you can. Thanks...

Hi, Usually this is called Desktop Search, you may have an entry in Add/remove programs but not likely, it runs right from the Registry....

do this:
Would like to have you post a log from HijackThis, a program (very tiny) that we use to see what problems exist.

There are directions here to do it: There are .zip form and .exe form, take your pick.

Download it here:

http://radiosplace.com/

Or here.

It's a direct download so be ready with the folder for it.

Basically, you create a new folder, the desktop is OK provided you make a folder, name it something like HJT, and download TO that folder, run hijackthis.exe from there. If there are users of the computer who might start HJT and use it, hide the program in a folder elsewhere!

First open a reply here in your thread to have it ready.
Run Hijackthis.exe, and
Select the "Scan and save a log" button...

When it is done scanning> the Save box will become available, save the log as hijackthis.txt which will open with Notepad. Hit the EDIT> Select All then the EDIT>Copy button at the top of your log, Go back to TSG, and click once in the blank reply space, then go to the top of your browser window and select EDIT>Paste.
Please do NOT use HJT yourself to remove anything, most of what it shows is good and needed by the system.

Hi, For the most part yes, you have a nicely infected machine and have posted the log correctly, but>

this part didn't get done: ""It's a direct download so be ready with the folder for it.

Basically, you create a new folder, the desktop is OK provided you make a folder, name it something like HJT, and download TO that folder, run hijackthis.exe from there. If there are users of the computer who might start HJT and use it, hide the program in a folder elsewhere! ""

You will have to create a new folder somewhere like My Documents folder...or, on the desktop> it is easier to do there. Right click any empty spot of your desktop background, and select New>Folder...while the New Folder is highlight, just type what you want to rename the folder TO, such as HJT or whatever you wish....and OK and you will see that folder name there. The reason for this is, that Hijackthis creates backups of items fixed....sometimes, a mistake is made on our end or by the user...so, we are sunk if you do not have it running where the backups are saved correctly! ((The temp files are deleted as part of most fixes...your backups will be gone))

Now, you need to get hijackthis.exe into that folder, sometimes it's just simpler to download a new one.

www.radiosplace.com

Now> post a log running hijackthis from it's own folder, not the temp Internet files. You do have some nasty malware there.

Sorry about that....Hopefully this run is better...

Hi, It also looks to me like you are using AdAware 6.0, that program has been retired and replaced with AdAware SE personal edition....follow these directions to get it and the newest version of Spybot Search and Destroy v. 1.3:

You need to check the Build of AdAware you have, it's right on the main window, we are using AdAware SE personal edition (the free one) v. 1.05 now, and even though you are just installing it, it will have some detection updates just after you install it, unless you get very lucky!

SpyBot Search and Destroy v. 1.3> is the latest. The older versions are abandoned and will not give you any more updates!

Both of those programs are available here:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html

Here are the directions for installing, updating, and using them:
AdAware:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode tick Perform full system scan.

Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.

Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Restart your computer.

[b[SpyBot 1.3:[/b]

Install the program and launch it.

Before scanning press Online and Search for Updates .

Put a check mark at and install all updates.

Click Check for Problems and when the scan is finished let Spybot fix/remove all it finds marked in RED.

Restart your computer.

Give this a shot, too:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3019.html

When you are done, post a new HJT log please.

An online scan at these places would be good> at least, do Panda and it lets you save a Report text file when you finish, could you post the contents of that report please when you are done along with your next hijackthis log.

Hi, Better!

Did you download this as I posted back a few replies...if so, good, we will run it a bit later....

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3019.html

Get it now if you did not before.

You will have to do the rest in Safe Mode--since these posts will not be available to you, please copy the directions to a simple Notepad text file and save it to your desktop as help.txt or something equally provocative:

To get to Safe Mode, tap the F8 key quickly several times when you start up or restart the system. When you see the startup menu, select Safe Mode (only) with the arrow key, and hit Enter to get to XP in safe mode....give it plenty of time to get to the desktop.

In Add/Remove Programs uninstall all Viewpoint things, Manager, media player, Toolbar= all.

Uninstall SpywareBegone if you see it also.(Freescan)

Same with PowerRegSchedulerv3

Now, run Hijackthis and put checks next to each of the items in my list, then click "Fix checked" You will not see some of these, but as things differ> check all that you have.

CWSInstall.exe will create the CWShredder.exe, on your desktop I think....that's what I want you to run>

Now- immediately run CWShredder.exe---use the "Fix" button and let it scan, at the end it will show you it found something or that the system was clean.

In Windows Explorer, find and delete these files, by manually navigating to the folders they are in, delete all you can find but continue if you do not find one or more--don't stop in the middle!!

PowerReg Scheduler.exe
C:\freescan\freescan.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\epmmbl.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\toolbar.dll/SEARCH.HTML
C:\WINDOWS\farmmext.exe

C:\WINDOWS\BTGrab.dll

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Toolbar\ViewBarBHO.dll
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Toolbar\ViewBar.dll
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe

Now, delete these folders in the order given:

C:\freescan
C:\WINDOWS\System32\toolbar.dll
C:\WINDOWS\isrvs
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Toolbar
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

Restart, run AdAware SE, have it check for updates if you did not do that already, run a Full scan, let it remove what it finds, restart and run SpyBot and do the same.

Restart...post a new log when you are all done, and ready.

((TSG is having some server1 trouble, so do not be mad if my replies are a bit slow in coming until they fix that!)) OK, we are back up now....

Hi, This can be fixed with Hijackthis:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {00D6A7E7-4A97-456f-848A-3B75BF7554D7} - (no file)

Yes, I have just worked on about the same thing over the weekend here> I had to rename files to delete them, even in Safe Mode they were not accessible...try that. Nothing showing in the log now, but check for those filenames we have been working on....and try changing the file extensions from .exe to .txt or .bad or .old Try changing them several times if one shot does not do it, for me it only took once and using Killbox to delete them upon reboot did work. So, if you still see them at some point, it may take a restart to show you they are completely gone.

If anything seems to come back, or you suspect something did, post a new HJT log here.

Do you still see Desktop Search sometimes?

#13 ·
I finally got rid of the files in "Safe mode"...thanks...
I haven't seen Desktop search since the last bit of instructions you gave me...So far ....So good...

I do have another problem with something appearing in my Add/Remove Programs of my control panel. I have started a new thread about it titled "Nospyx bug??" If you would like to help ....let me know...

I didn't want to feel like I was loading all my problems on you.

Thanks again.... :)

Hi, Glad things have worked out and hope it stays good.

Depending on your other thread...your next step would be to turn off System Restore to flush infected Restore Points off the computer...read about it here:

This only temporarily, you then turn Restore back on and create a new Restore Point. It's all a very simple process as you will see, but it is neccessary to do. We don't want you using System Restore and putting all that stuff back= that's what happens if you do not flush the old Points out.

Sounds like the NospyX is one of those popups about something found on your computer, click here...hope no one did.
