I have Win98, but I've customized it with Stardock Object Desktop so almost everything looks exactly like XP. This means that Internet Explorer, Windows menus, toolbars, and the Start button and its menu look identical to XP's design. Now, I want to make my desktop "clean" by putting almost everything in the Start menu; for example, I want to access IE thru Start exclusively. But I'm afraid to delete the IE icon from my desktop, because it says "This item cannot be stored in the trash bin. Are you sure you want to delete it?" I want to do the same for My Documents, My Computer, etc., but is it safe to delete all these icons, even though they're already displayed in the Start menu?

You can restore the IE icon any time by going to Internet Options/advanced, and checking 'Show Internet Explorer on the desktop'.

You can rightclick the My Documents folder on your desktop, and choose 'Remove from Desktop' from the context menu.

It will prompt to confirm the operation.

Other things there are best removed (hidden) with Tweak UI 1.33

Only 'My Computer' is best left alone.

Good luck,
