Hi,
My HP laptop seems to be working fine other than my delete key doesn't work properly. The backspace works and I have checked to see if the delete key is clean and it is. I have Googled but after trying a few suggestions including deleting the keyboard driver and then reinstalling, delete still not working. It almost seems that Win 10 or 11 is the cause but I am not certain. Any suggestions?

If your laptop does not already have HP's diagnostics installed, you can get them here:

Select the option to diagnose issues outside of Windows (to eliminate driver concerns).

Has any liquid been spilt on the laptop keyboard

what check was made regarding the delete key being clean

Connect an external keyboard see if that works

No liquid has been split on the keyboard and I checked as closely as possible to the delete key to make sure it was clean, but I was reluctant to take the key off. I just tried an external keyboard and the delete key does work if I move the front of text going forward. I does not work at the end of the word. My lap top delete key is now deleting like the external keyboard. Works if I move the curson over to the beginning of text.

You have not by any chance got stick keys turned on - have you
Notifications area on right of taskbar will show icon
one horizontal rectangle above three smaller vertical rectangles

If so
To disable Sticky Keys simply press both the “Ctrl” and “Shift” buttons simultaneously until the icon disappears from the screen. This will allow you to continue typing normally again with no additional hassles or complications. Once disabled, make sure that Sticky Keys is off in your settings so that it won’t accidentally get activated again in the future.

Keyboard
Sticky keys toggle on main pane

EDIT

I have just realised what you have posted in your last post

that is how it should work

The keyboard key used to delete the text character at, or to the right of, the screen cursor. Pressing Delete (DEL) also deletes the currently highlighted text, image or group of images. The Delete key removes characters to the right of the cursor, whereas the Backspace key deletes to the left. See Backspace key.

backspace from end of text
delete from front of text
drag mouse across and then delete
all text is deleted

Thank you all for your suggestions. I don't believe that my sticky key is on, but I did follow your directions, and it turned back on my notifications, which I had turned off months ago. While my delete key was working from the front of the text, it is now back to not working at all. I suppose the best I can do is use the arrow and backspace buttons and forget about the delete key.

Try this software:

Check to see if the software registers the press. If it doesn't, and if you feel adventurous, try a LiveUSB for Linux, which does not install on your computer, and see if it does work. If it does, then something is on your Windows build. If it doesn't, then that specific key is now defective.

Also I advised that you turn STCKY KEYS OFF - if you had it on.
NOT the other way round

For reference, you have an HP Notebook - 17-by0053cl, just over 6 years old.

I would still try the software, and the Linux LiveUSB to confirm if it's a hardware issue.

Typically if it is a keyboard failure, you would have more than one key. The Delete key may be just worn down and if that is the case, then the whole keyboard will need to be replaced. (or go with a wireless keyboard)

YOUR DELETE Key was working as it should and I did not say to check sticky keys, with respect I said

I can only presume that you have not read my posts properly OR perhaps English is not your first language
