I have had a problem recently for about a month with e-mails turning up daily with a virus infected attachment. They always have only a short subject like"stolen", "hoax", "hi", "fake". As I use Mailwasher I can view their content before download and they always have only a brief sentence like "I have your password", "kill the writer of this document", "do you", "I have control".
They are always reported to come from legitimate addresses which I know but are different every time, and they always carry an attachment which has been verified as virus infected. As I have file extensions on permanently I recognised the first one as suspicious as it was a .EXE masquerading as a JPEG, "*****.jpg.exe". At the moment I am not sure what they are infected with as, after that first one which of course I took no notice of as I deleted it, I always delete them automatically before download. My wife did on one occasion accidentally pick up the mail and got a fright as Norton reported an infected attachment, but again she simply deleted it quickly without noticing the virus. Should I try to download one and let Norton pick it up and report the virus content?
Norton AV shows a clean sweep as do online checks. AdAware and Spybot show nothing amiss. I do not know whether there is some automatic process causing this or whether it is something more personal. Has anyone else any recent experience of this or can you offer advice beyond the obvious things?
